It’s ideal for students who care deeply about mental health, enjoy working closely with people, and want to make a real difference in their communities.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
Your first year focuses on building strong foundations in both the science and practice of nursing. Modules like Introduction to Professional Practice, Applied Health Science for Nursing Practice, and Foundations of Health Sciences for Nursing Practice help you understand anatomy, physiology, and the principles of safe, ethical, person‑centred care. You’ll also start applying this knowledge in practical sessions, giving you early exposure to the real-world nursing environment.

Year 2
In year two, you begin to specialise in mental health nursing. You’ll explore modules that cover care planning, psychosocial approaches, mental health crises, and working with diverse populations, including neurodiverse patients. Combined with practical placements, this year helps you start putting theory into practice and gain confidence in real mental health settings.

Year 3
The final year is about refining your skills and preparing for professional practice. You’ll undertake advanced clinical placements across inpatient and community settings, practise complex assessment and therapeutic skills, and learn to handle challenging mental health situations. By the end of the year, you’ll be ready to register as a Mental Health Nurse and start your career with confidence.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Southampton, Mental Health Nursing isn’t just about lectures — it’s about learning by doing. From the start, you’ll practise your skills in purpose-built clinical environments and gradually spend more time in real hospitals, community services, and mental health settings. This mix of simulation and real-world placements helps you grow into a confident, capable mental-health nurse.

Here’s how your practical learning is structured:

  • Simulated hospital wards and skills rooms: Train in realistic wards with hospital beds, nurse-call systems, medical gases, and advanced manikins that mimic real patient vital signs. You can practise assessments, interventions, and crisis response safely before working with real patients.

  • Varied clinical placements: Spend time in inpatient mental health wards, community mental health teams, crisis intervention units, and other specialised settings. This hands-on experience exposes you to a wide range of mental health conditions and care environments.

  • Balanced practice hours: The course combines simulated practice with real placements, helping you steadily build competence and confidence while completing your required clinical hours.

  • Guided supervision and mentoring: Experienced registered nurses act as your mentors during placements, providing guidance, feedback, and support as you develop professional skills.

  • Learning resources and support: You’ll also have access to libraries, IT tools, digital learning resources, and personal academic tutors to reinforce your learning and reflection.
