Curriculum Structure
Foundation Year: This first year is all about getting you ready for university-level nursing. Through modules like Foundation Studies for Nursing, you’ll explore the basics of anatomy and physiology, develop communication skills, and get introduced to person-centred care, teamwork, and the healthcare environment. It’s the perfect way to build confidence and set yourself up for success.
Year 1 (Degree Part): You’ll begin your journey into adult nursing, covering ethics, anatomy & physiology, public health, and evidence-based practice. This year helps you understand both the science and the human side of nursing, preparing you for hands-on experiences.
Year 2: Here you deepen your knowledge, focusing on long-term conditions, transitions in care, and managing sensitive situations such as difficult conversations with patients and families. You’ll also develop leadership, decision-making, and holistic care skills, learning how physical, legal, ethical, and social factors influence patient care.
Year 3 (Final Year): In your final year, you’ll refine advanced nursing skills — from assessing and managing deteriorating patients to planning comprehensive care. This stage prepares you to graduate as a confident, professional adult nurse ready to register and practise.
Focus areas: Adult health nursing, anatomy & physiology, public health & illness prevention, long-term condition management, holistic patient care, ethics & evidence-based practice, clinical decision making, patient assessment and management
Learning outcomes: Provide compassionate, evidence-based care for adults; competently assess and manage diverse health conditions; understand ethical, legal, and social aspects of nursing; work effectively in multidisciplinary teams; be fully prepared for professional registration.
Professional alignment (accreditation): Approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), so you’ll meet all the requirements to register as a qualified adult nurse.
Reputation (employability & rankings): Surrey’s nursing programmes are highly regarded — ranked 11th in the UK by QS (2025), with 99% of health-sciences graduates moving into employment or further study.
When you study Adult Nursing at Surrey, you’ll spend your time learning by doing. From day one, you’ll practise real nursing skills in realistic, hospital-style settings and gain hands-on experience through supervised clinical placements. It’s a course designed to help you build confidence, clinical judgment, and practical skills long before you graduate.
Here’s how your practical learning comes to life:
Clinical Simulation Centre & hospital-style wards: You’ll use Surrey’s state-of-the-art simulation centre, including hospital wards and a critical care unit, to practise patient assessment, communication, teamwork, and crisis response using lifelike manikins and professional actors.
Blended teaching from the start: Even in the Foundation Year, you’ll combine lectures, seminars, group work, online learning, and hands-on simulation, so you’re applying what you learn from day one.
Real-world clinical placements: Throughout the degree, you’ll work in NHS partner hospitals and care settings, gaining firsthand experience with patients and understanding the day-to-day realities of nursing.
Team-based learning: You’ll learn alongside students from midwifery, paramedic science, and other health disciplines, giving you early experience of working in multidisciplinary teams.
Progressive skill development: Starting with core modules like Adult Nursing 1, you’ll practise assessment, decision-making, and basic care. Later modules, such as Adult Nursing 3, help you build advanced clinical skills, medicines management, and ethical decision-making in preparation for professional practice.
Supportive learning & reflection: Experienced teaching staff guide you throughout, encouraging reflective practice, discussion, and evidence-based learning to help you grow as a confident, caring nurse.
