The BNurs (Hons) Mental Health Nursing with Foundation Year at Wolverhampton is designed for students who want to make a real difference in people’s mental wellbeing. It starts with a foundation year to build your confidence and skills before moving into professional mental health nursing, preparing you to care for people of all ages in a variety of settings.
Curriculum Structure
Foundation Year (Year 0):
The foundation year helps you get ready for the demands of a professional nursing degree. You’ll study Introduction to the Human Body to understand how body systems work together, take Preparing for a Professional Course to develop your study, research, and reflective skills, and explore Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Ethics, giving you a strong foundation in professional values and compassionate care.
Year 1 (Level 4):
In your first year, you’ll combine classroom learning with early clinical experiences. Factors Affecting Health introduces the social, economic, and environmental influences on mental health, while Interprofessional Working helps you learn how to collaborate effectively with students from other healthcare disciplines. Introduction to Higher Education strengthens your academic skills, helping you succeed in research, writing, and critical thinking.
Year 2 (Level 5):
This year focuses more specifically on mental health nursing. Challenges to Health and Wellbeing explores mental health inequalities and health promotion, while Contemporary Evidence Based Practice in Mental Health Nursing teaches you to assess mental, cognitive, and behavioural health needs and apply evidence-informed interventions. Skills for Safe and Effective Practice ensures you gain confidence in clinical procedures, pharmacology, and delivering person-centred care.
Year 3 (Level 6):
In your final year, you’ll refine your skills and prepare to become a registered mental health nurse. Advancing Skills in Contemporary Mental Health Nursing Practice focuses on complex mental health care, and Enhancing Safety and Quality of Care in Mental Health Nursing develops your understanding of risk management and patient safety. The Independent Inquiry Module allows you to research a topic you’re passionate about, and Preparing for Transition as a Registered Practitioner gives you the leadership, interprofessional, and decision-making skills to confidently start your career.

Simulation & Skills Labs – Practise realistic mental health scenarios on campus to gain confidence before placements.

Graduating from Wolverhampton’s BNurs (Hons) Mental Health Nursing gives you the chance to step straight into a meaningful career supporting people with mental health needs. You’ll be eligible to register as a qualified Mental Health Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), opening doors across hospitals, community services, and specialist mental health units.
