At York, nursing is all about learning by doing. From your very first year, you’ll combine classroom knowledge with hands-on practice, using realistic simulation facilities and spending time in real hospitals and community care settings. This approach helps you build confidence, learn safely, and gain the skills you’ll need as a professional adult nurse.
Here’s what practical learning looks like in the programme:
Clinical Simulation Unit (mock hospital ward): Practise nursing skills in a realistic ward environment, from monitoring vital signs to responding to emergencies, all in a safe, supervised setting.
Placements in hospitals and community settings: Gain real-world experience by caring for patients under the guidance of experienced nurses, learning how adult care works day-to-day.
Variety of placements: Experience different areas of adult nursing, from general wards to community care, helping you adapt to different environments and find your preferred area of practice.
Dedicated placement support: The practice-learning team helps coordinate your placements and ensures you get meaningful, safe experiences while offering guidance and feedback.
Balanced theory and practice: Alongside hands-on training, you’ll study biological, sociological, and pharmacological aspects of care, helping you understand the ‘why’ behind what you do and make informed, compassionate decisions.
