Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At York, mental-health nursing is about learning by doing. From the very first year, you’ll gain hands-on experience in both simulated and real-world settings, so that by the time you graduate, you’ll feel confident supporting people with mental-health needs in a variety of environments. You’ll be able to practise essential skills safely, develop clinical confidence, and understand how theory translates into day-to-day nursing practice.

Here’s how you’ll experience this in practice:

  • Clinical Simulation Unit (CSU): A mock hospital ward, intensive-care suite, and bedsit let you practise clinical and care skills safely under supervision before working with real patients.

  • Real-world placements every year: You’ll spend time in inpatient mental-health services, community mental-health teams, and hospital or social care settings, applying what you’ve learned and building practical experience.

  • Campus and placement balance: Your learning alternates between lectures, seminars, and simulation sessions on campus, and full weeks on placement, giving you a mix of theory and hands-on practice.

  • Dedicated Practice Learning Team: This team supports and guides you through your placements, helping you make the most of every experience.

  • Integration of theory and practice: While in placements and simulations, you’ll also study modules covering biological, psychological, and sociological aspects of health, helping you understand people’s needs from a holistic perspective.
