BSc Hons Dietetics

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

London Metropolitan University

Program Overview

If you’ve ever wanted to make a real difference to people’s health through food and science, this course is for you. London Met’s Dietetics BSc (Hons) doesn’t just teach you nutrition — it trains you to become a fully qualified dietitian, blending science, healthcare, and hands-on practice so you’re ready to work in hospitals, community health, or public health projects.

Curriculum structure

Year 1
Your first year is all about building strong foundations. You’ll get to grips with the science side — Anatomy and Physiology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry for Life Sciences — alongside nutrition basics like Essentials of Human Nutrition and Dietary Assessment Techniques for Dietitians. You’ll also step into a simulated placement (Practice Based Learning 1) so you can see how real-world dietetic work unfolds.

Year 2
In your second year, things get more applied. You’ll study Nutrition and Dietetic Care, Nutrition Through the Lifecycle, and Public Health Nutrition to see how diet affects people at different stages of life and in the wider community. Modules like Systems Pathology for Dietitians and Metabolic Biochemistry for Nutrition help you understand how disease and metabolism link to diet, while Public Health Practice Based Learning gives you experience outside the classroom.

Year 3
Your final year brings everything together with two major placements (Practice Based Learning 2 and 3) where you’ll work directly with patients and healthcare teams. You’ll also carry out your own Dietetics and Nutrition Research Project, and take modules like Management of Health and Social Care and Techniques in Dietetic and Nutrition Research. By graduation, you’ll feel confident stepping into the profession as an HCPC-registered dietitian.

Focus areas

Clinical nutrition, public health nutrition, lifecycle nutrition, research, dietetic care and disease management.

Learning outcomes

By the end, you’ll know how to assess and treat nutrition-related conditions, design and deliver dietetic care plans, carry out research, and work to professional, ethical and legal standards while communicating effectively with patients and healthcare teams.

Professional alignment (accreditation)

This degree is fully accredited by the British Dietetic Association (BDA). Once you graduate, you’ll be eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) — the gold standard for practicing as a dietitian in the UK.

Reputation (employability / rankings)

London Met is ranked First in London and seventh in the UK for food science courses (Guardian League Table 2025). The course also scored 91% in the latest National Student Survey for teaching, learning support, and assessment — showing students feel highly supported and prepared.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

One of the best things about studying Dietetics at London Met is how much real-world experience you get alongside your academic study. From your very first year you’ll step out of the lecture room and into environments that feel like genuine healthcare settings — whether that’s in our simulated hospital ward and outpatient clinics, in the technical kitchens and labs, or out on placement with NHS partners. These experiences mean you won’t just know dietetics — you’ll already have practiced it by the time you graduate.

Here’s a closer look at what you’ll do:

  • Three major placements: you’ll complete a short placement in Year 1 to get an early feel for dietetics, a 12-week placement in Year 2, and a 14-week placement in Year 3 — often within NHS hospitals, community health services, or public health teams.

  • Simulated hospital and outpatient environments: London Met has dedicated spaces where you’ll practice patient consultations, assessments, and treatment planning before working with real patients.

  • Specialist kitchens and science labs: you’ll experiment with food and nutrition in professional facilities, learning how to analyse nutrient composition and develop diet plans in a practical, hands-on way.

  • Team-based learning: through case studies, role-plays, and group projects you’ll work like part of a healthcare team, mirroring the kind of collaboration you’ll do as a practicing dietitian.

  • Guest lectures and expert input: specialists from the field share the latest in clinical nutrition and public health, helping you connect classroom knowledge with professional practice.

  • Research opportunities: in your final year you’ll carry out an independent Dietetics and Nutrition Research Project, using London Met’s resources and expert supervision to tackle a question you’re passionate about.
