5 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
If you’re fascinated by how food, lifestyle, and health come together, this course is perfect for you. It starts with a foundation year to get you up to speed on the science and study skills you’ll need, then takes you through three years of exploring human nutrition, physiology, public health, and even sport and exercise nutrition — with an optional placement year to gain real-world experience.
Curriculum Structure
Foundation Year (Year 0)
This year helps you build confidence and get ready for degree-level study. You’ll cover Biology, Chemistry, Introduction to Physiology, Critical Thinking, and Academic Practice, giving you the core knowledge and skills to succeed in the years ahead. It’s the perfect springboard if you’re new to science or switching subjects.
Year 1
Now you dive into the science of nutrition. Modules like Cell Biology, Human Physiology, Principles of Human Nutrition, Metabolism of Nutrition and Exercise, and Psychology and Sociology of Health and Well-being will help you understand how the body works and how diet and lifestyle affect health. This year sets a solid foundation in both the science and social aspects of nutrition.
Year 2
You start applying what you’ve learned. With modules such as Applied Nutrition, Diet in Health and Disease, Exercise Physiology in Action, and Metabolic Biochemistry, you’ll explore real-life health and performance issues. You’ll also build strong research skills, preparing you for advanced study and your final project.
Optional Placement / Study Abroad Year
Between Years 2 and 3, you can take a year working in industry or studying abroad. This gives you hands-on experience in nutrition, public health, or sport, helping you stand out to employers and giving you a taste of life outside the classroom.
Year 3 (Final Year)
Your final year is all about specialising and independent research. You’ll study Applied Medical Sciences, Applied Nutrition and Performance, Applied Public Health Nutrition, and complete a Final Year Project. There are also options like Gene Editing and Genomics, Nutrition in Emergencies, and Nutrition in Practice, letting you tailor your degree to your interests and career goals.
Focus Areas
Public Health Nutrition; Sport & Exercise Nutrition; Molecular and Physiological Nutrition; Nutrition in Disease; Behavioural & Social Aspects of Health
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this degree, you’ll know how nutrients work in the body, how diet affects health and disease, how to plan nutrition interventions, carry out research, and communicate your findings effectively. You’ll also gain lab experience and practical skills that employers really value.
Professional Alignment
The course is accredited by the Association for Nutrition (AfN). Graduates can register as an Associate Nutritionist (ANutr) — a recognized credential that opens doors in the health and nutrition sectors.
Reputation & Employability
Westminster has excellent lab facilities, from body composition testing to metabolism labs. Graduates go on to careers in public health, the NHS, food industry, sports nutrition, consultancy, policy, and international health organisations. The optional placement year gives you work experience that makes your CV stand out even more.
On this course, you won’t just be sitting in lecture theatres — you’ll be learning by doing from day one. Westminster gives you access to professional-level labs and specialist equipment, so you can practice the same techniques used in nutrition research and industry. You’ll get comfortable with biochemical testing, analysing food and nutrients, measuring body composition, and even working in group projects that mirror how nutritionists operate in real life. And if you want to take your skills further, there’s the option of a placement year in industry or studying abroad.
Here’s a taste of what that looks like in practice:
Modern bioscience labs where you’ll do hands-on work in nutritional analysis, metabolism studies, and body composition measurement.
The Centre for Nutraceuticals, a specialist research hub with state-of-the-art facilities like analytical labs, a phlebotomy suite, a tissue culture lab, and even a food preparation kitchen for experimental studies.
Full access to the Cavendish Library and its nutrition subject guides, giving you dedicated resources and librarian support for your projects and research.
A chance to tailor your learning in later years towards Human Nutrition or Human Nutrition with Exercise Science, depending on your interests.
The option to take a professional placement year in industry or a study abroad year, giving you valuable real-world experience and international perspective.
A mix of practical assessments, group projects, and lab work that ensure you graduate with experience, not just theory.
