Program Overview

The MPharm (Hons) Pharmacy program at De Montfort University (DMU) is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to become registered pharmacists. The curriculum integrates scientific principles with practical pharmacy practice, ensuring graduates are prepared for diverse roles in healthcare settings.

Curriculum Structure:

Year 1:

  • Introduction to Pharmacy and the Patient – Professional Portfolio: Develop essential professional and prescribing skills required of a practicing pharmacist, including communication and consultation skills, assessed through practical assessments and in-practice observations during placements. 

  • Integrated Science for Pharmacy: Introduction to biological sciences, including cell biology and microbiology, alongside basic anatomy and physiology, establishing an understanding of the safe and legal use of medicines. 

  • The Patient: Sensory and Topical Body Systems: Study of the skin, eyes, ears, and nose, integrating biological sciences with the safe and appropriate use of medicines for these systems.

Year 2:

  • Quality Medicines: Design, Development and Analysis: Focus on the formulation and development of safe and effective oral dosage forms, integrating knowledge from physical and biological sciences. 

  • The Patient: Internal Body Systems: Study of the gastrointestinal system, associated conditions, and nutrition, with a focus on managing symptoms safely at home. 

  • Introduction to Co-morbidities and Person-Centred Care – Professional Portfolio: Continued development of professional skills and competencies required of a practicing pharmacist, including communication and consultation skills, assessed through practical assessments and in-practice observations during placements.

Year 3:

  • Introduction to Cardiovascular Disease and Respiratory Systems: Adoption of a patient-centred approach to learning about cardiovascular and respiratory function and disease, with a focus on clinical case studies.

  • Personalised Medicines and the Complex Patient – Professional Portfolio: Development of essential professional skills and competencies required of a practicing pharmacist, including communication and consultation skills, assessed through practical assessments and in-practice observations during placements. 

  • The Patient: The Central Nervous System: Study of the function of the central nervous system and the pharmacodynamic, pharmacokinetic, and physicochemical properties of medicines targeting it. 

Year 4:

  • Advanced Clinical Practice: Engagement in advanced clinical practice, applying knowledge and skills in real-world healthcare settings. 

  • Research Project: Conducting an independent research project, contributing to the advancement of pharmacy practice.

  • Clinical Skills Teaching Rooms: Participate in sessions that focus on developing essential clinical skills, including patient assessment and consultation techniques.

  • DMUglobal Opportunities: Engage in international experiences that enhance global awareness and cultural competence in pharmacy practice.
