University of BrightonThe BSc (Hons) Pharmaceutical and Chemical Sciences with Foundation Year at the University of Brighton is designed for students who are passionate about pharmaceuticals and chemistry but may need an extra year of academic preparation before beginning the main degree. The foundation year acts as a stepping stone, building confidence and core knowledge in essential sciences such as chemistry, biology, and mathematics, while also introducing students to basic laboratory techniques and academic skills needed for higher education. After successfully completing the foundation year, students progress directly into the full undergraduate program, where they study advanced topics such as drug design, pharmacology, analytical chemistry, and formulation science. This pathway makes the degree accessible to students from diverse educational backgrounds while ensuring they are fully prepared to succeed in the demanding world of pharmaceutical and chemical sciences.
Experiential learning is central to the course, even during the foundation year. Students engage in hands-on laboratory sessions that introduce them to scientific methods, safe lab practices, and experimental design. As they progress into the main degree, they expand their practical skills by working with advanced equipment and analytical techniques, including chromatography, spectroscopy, and molecular modeling. Research-led teaching exposes students to the latest developments in drug discovery and chemical sciences, while optional placement opportunities allow them to gain industry experience in pharmaceutical, biotech, or healthcare organizations. By participating in group projects, independent research, and laboratory-based assignments, students develop the professional skills and technical expertise that employers seek.
This program is designed to prepare graduates for a wide range of career pathways in science and healthcare. Many students go on to work in pharmaceutical research and development, drug manufacturing, regulatory affairs, or biotechnology. Others pursue careers in analytical chemistry, toxicology, or clinical research. The strong scientific and laboratory foundation also makes graduates well-suited for roles in the chemical industry, forensics, or medical technology. Additionally, the program provides a solid platform for postgraduate studies, including master’s and doctoral degrees in pharmaceutical sciences, medicinal chemistry, or related fields. Entry requirements are in the range of A-level BBB–BCC (120–104 UCAS Tariff points) or BTEC Extended Diploma DMM–MMM. Our conditional offers typically fall within this range.A-levels must include chemistry. If you do not have chemistry at A-level, you must have the subject at AS-level with a minimum grade C. BTEC should be applied science or similar subject.26 points, with three subjects at Higher level.
