Pharmacy MPharm with preparatory year

5 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Brighton

Program Overview

Brighton’s MPharm Pharmacy with Preparatory Year is a five-year, GPhC-accredited pathway designed for students who don’t yet meet the entry requirements for direct MPharm entry — whether you're changing careers, returning to study, or coming from a non-science background. The foundation year builds your academic confidence and scientific grounding, before progressing into Brighton’s clinically focused pharmacy degree.

Curriculum Structure

Preparatory Year
You’ll study core science subjects including biology, chemistry, and mathematics, alongside academic skills and lab techniques. This year is designed to bridge the gap and prepare you for the demands of the MPharm curriculum.

Year 1
You’ll explore Fundamentals of Pharmacy: From Molecules to Medicine, The Healthy Human and Healthcare Delivery, and Minor Illness. You’ll begin developing clinical and professional skills through simulation and a two-week placement, while learning about drug formulation and the NHS.

Year 2
Modules include Cardiovascular and Related Systems, Endocrine and Immunity, and Infectious Disease and Global Health. You’ll deepen your understanding of pharmacology and prescribing, supported by simulation workshops and another two-week placement.

Year 3
You’ll study Neurological Disorders and Mental Health, Molecular and Genomic Medicine, and Managing Complex Patients. A four-week placement and 20 simulation workshops help you refine your clinical reasoning and communication skills.

Final Year
Focus shifts to multi-morbidity and ageing, with a four-week placement and advanced simulation-based training. You’ll complete a supervised Pharmacy Research Project and demonstrate readiness for the GPhC Foundation Training Year.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Brighton’s MPharm Pharmacy with Preparatory Year is built around immersive, hands-on learning — starting with foundational science labs and progressing into advanced clinical simulations, placements, and research. From Year 1 onward, you’ll train in real-world healthcare environments, using diagnostic tools, prescribing software, and formulation labs to build the confidence and competence expected of future pharmacists.

Here’s how experiential learning is embedded throughout the five-year pathway:

  • Foundation Year science labs: You’ll gain practical lab experience in biology, chemistry, and mathematics, preparing for the scientific demands of pharmacy.
  • Clinical Skills and Simulation Suite: Used throughout the MPharm years, this facility supports training in diagnostics, prescribing, and patient communication using simulated scenarios and patient actors.
  • Formulation laboratories: Students work with industry-standard equipment to compound medicines, test drug stability, and explore pharmaceutical technologies.
  • Digital prescribing and diagnostic tools: Includes electronic prescribing systems, clinical decision support software, and simulation platforms to support safe and effective practice.
  • Group-based case studies and projects: Integrated across all years to develop teamwork, ethical reasoning, and clinical decision-making.
  • Structured placements: You’ll complete two-week placements in Years 1 and 2, and four-week placements in Years 3 and 4 across community and hospital settings in Sussex.
  • 20 simulation workshops in Year 3: These intensive sessions build advanced clinical and communication skills, preparing you for complex patient care.
  • Pharmacy Research Project in Year 4: You’ll conduct supervised research in areas like formulation science, medicines optimisation, or public health, contributing to real academic inquiry.
  • Access to the Moulsecoomb campus library and e-resources: Includes specialist pharmaceutical databases, journals, and prescribing guidelines.
  • School of Applied Sciences: Home to the pharmacy program, the school supports interdisciplinary learning and research across healthcare, chemistry, and biomedical science.
