MPharm Pharmacy with a Preparatory Year

5 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of East Anglia

Program Overview

UEA’s MPharm Pharmacy with a Preparatory Year is a five-year, GPhC-accredited degree designed for students who need a strong academic foundation before entering the full MPharm. It’s ideal for those who don’t meet direct entry requirements but are committed to becoming confident, clinically skilled pharmacists through a curriculum that blends science, practice, and patient care.

Curriculum structure

Preparatory Year
You’ll build essential knowledge in mathematics, biology, chemistry, and pharmacy skills, with modules like Introduction to Pharmacy Skills, Further Biology, and Further Chemistry. Optional modules such as Introductory Mathematics for Scientists and Introductory Programming help tailor your learning to pharmacy’s interdisciplinary demands.

Year 1
You’ll study Medicines and Patients, Pharmaceutical Analysis, and Pharmacy Practice, gaining a strong foundation in drug formulation, pharmacokinetics, and patient interaction. Clinical placements begin early, supported by simulation and case-based learning.

Year 2
This year deepens your understanding of infectious diseases, cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, and endocrine disorders. You’ll explore modules like Pharmacology and Therapeutics and Pharmaceutical Care, while refining your clinical decision-making and communication skills.

Year 3
You’ll tackle complex patient scenarios in modules such as Advanced Pharmacy Practice, Medicines Optimisation, and Clinical Pharmacokinetics. Placements expand into hospital and primary care settings, and you’ll begin preparing for independent prescribing.

Year 4
The final year focuses on research, leadership, and professional readiness. You’ll complete a Pharmacy Research Project, engage in advanced clinical placements, and demonstrate your competencies through portfolio-based assessments and clinical observations.
