MPharm Pharmacy

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Sunderland

Program Overview

Sunderland’s MPharm Pharmacy is a clinically focused, science-rich degree that prepares you to become an independent prescribing pharmacist from day one. It’s ideal for students who want to combine pharmaceutical expertise with real-world patient care — supported by placements, simulation, and a century of pharmacy education.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
You’ll build a strong scientific foundation through Fundamentals of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Formulation, Fundamentals of Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology and Microbiology, and The Professional Practice of Pharmacy. These modules cover drug design, body systems, microbiology, and introduce you to patient care and public health — alongside your first community pharmacy placement.

Year 2
This year focuses on legal and clinical frameworks with Pharmacy: the Legal, Professional and Ethical Basis of Practice, plus two therapeutics modules: Integrated Therapeutics 1: Cardiovascular and Renal Systems and Integrated Therapeutics 2: Respiratory and Gastrointestinal Systems. You’ll explore disease management, prescribing principles, and continue placements in community settings.

Year 3
You’ll undertake a supervised Research Module, often linked to NHS or industry partners. Therapeutics modules expand to Endocrine, Genito-Urinary and Musculoskeletal Systems and Central Nervous System and Skin, covering diabetes, mental health, and dermatology. Clinical placements now include hospitals and primary care.

Year 4
Final-year modules Applied Practice: Achieving Optimal Clinical Outcomes and Advanced Therapeutics prepare you for independent prescribing. You’ll learn advanced diagnostics, cancer pharmacology, and complex patient care — with simulation and real-world scenarios integrated throughout.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Sunderland’s MPharm Pharmacy is built around hands-on learning — from your first community placement to advanced prescribing simulations in your final year. You’ll develop clinical, scientific, and communication skills in purpose-designed facilities, working with real patients, digital tools, and NHS partners throughout the course.

Here’s how experiential learning is embedded into the program:

  • Clinical placements begin in Year 1, including community pharmacy experience and later expanding to hospital and GP settings.
  • The Living Lab and Clinical Skills Suite simulate real-world healthcare environments, supporting diagnostic training, patient consultation, and prescribing practice.
  • Specialist pharmaceutical science labs support drug formulation, pharmacokinetics, and microbiology — all housed within the Sciences Complex.
  • Research projects in Year 3 are supervised by academic staff and often linked to NHS or pharmaceutical industry partners.
  • Digital learning tools and simulation software are used to support prescribing, clinical decision-making, and patient safety.
  • Group-based learning and interprofessional education are integrated throughout, including collaborative case studies and peer-led workshops.
  • Access to the Murray Library and online scientific databases, supporting evidence-based practice and research skills.

This is a degree that prepares you for the real world — with the tools, placements, and support to match.
