BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of East London

Program Overview

Choosing the BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy at UEL means stepping into a degree that prepares you to become a confident, qualified physiotherapist who can work across hospitals, clinics, rehab centres and community services. Over three years, you’ll explore how the human body works, learn to make strong clinical decisions, and develop hands-on treatment skills — all supported by experienced professionals in a realistic, practice-focused learning environment.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

Your first year gives you a solid grounding in the essentials. You’ll study Anatomy and Assessment Skills 1, Introduction to Physiology, and build your core techniques through Physiotherapy Clinical Skills. Alongside this, Professional Practice (Mental Wealth) helps you grow your professional mindset, while Practice Based Learning 1 introduces you to real clinical environments early on. By the end of the year, you’ll feel comfortable with both the science and the basic practical skills behind physiotherapy.

Year 2

In your second year, you start exploring the body’s major systems in more depth. You’ll work through Cardiovascular, Neurological, and Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy, gaining a stronger understanding of how different conditions affect movement and recovery. A dedicated Research Methods module strengthens your ability to use evidence in decision-making, and Practice Based Learning 2 plus Physiotherapy Rehabilitation give you the chance to apply your growing expertise with more complex patient scenarios.

Year 3

Your final year is all about becoming a capable, independent practitioner. You’ll take on advanced modules such as Complex Practice 1 and Complex Practice 2, where you work through challenging and multi-layered patient cases. Neuromusculoskeletal Assessment and Trauma sharpens your diagnostic skills, while Research Governance and Leadership prepares you for the professional responsibilities that come with the career. You’ll also complete several Practice Based Learning placements, giving you extensive real-world experience before graduating.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Alongside this, the course builds your confidence through regular placements, so by the time you graduate, you already feel like part of the healthcare workforce.

Here’s how you get hands-on experience throughout the degree:

  • Extensive Clinical Placements – You’ll spend a large portion of your training working directly with patients in NHS trusts and private healthcare settings, applying your learning in real clinical situations.

  • State-of-the-Art Simulation Centre – UEL has a dedicated simulation building with realistic hospital wards, intensive care settings, and home-care rooms where you can practise assessments and treatments on advanced manikins.

  • Interprofessional Simulated Ward – You’ll work alongside students from nursing, podiatry and other health professions in team-based scenarios, helping you develop the teamwork skills you’ll use every day in practice.

  • Specialised Physiotherapy Labs – The university provides fully equipped physiotherapy labs with treatment couches and hands-on practice areas where you’ll refine your assessment and manual therapy techniques.

  • Research and Science Facilities – As part of the School of Health, Sport and Bioscience, you’ll have access to research labs fitted with motion-capture systems, metabolic analysers, and body-composition testing equipment — ideal for evidence-based practice.

  • Digital Learning Tools – Your course materials, case studies, and extra resources are available through UEL’s Virtual Learning Environment, making it easy to revise or prep for practical sessions.

  • Career Zone Support – Throughout the course, you’ll use UEL’s career development platform to find internships, build your CV, and connect with mentors who understand the healthcare field.

  • Stratford Library & Study Spaces – You’ll have access to a well-equipped library with dedicated health-resource sections, quiet zones, group-study rooms, and online academic journals to support your learning.
