BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy

The BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy at Ulster University is a three-year full-time honours degree that trains students to become modern, competent, and research-informed physiotherapists capable of assessing, treating, and rehabilitating a wide range of movement and health conditions. Curriculum structure

First Year:

In the first year, students build essential foundations in human structure, function, and clinical assessment through modules such as Structure, Function & Assessment of the Human Body 1 & 2 and Cardiorespiratory 1. These units develop understanding of anatomy and basic physiotherapy assessment techniques. Alongside this, Fundamentals of Rehabilitation with Conditions 1 & 2 introduces exercise physiology, early clinical reasoning, and basic rehabilitation principles, while Learning to be a Professional Physiotherapist in Practice prepares students for professional expectations and early placement experiences.

Second Year:

In the second year, students progress to more specialised clinical content with modules including Neurological Rehabilitation 1 & 2, Musculoskeletal Assessment and Management: Upper & Lower Quadrant, and Practice-Based Learning 2 & 3. These courses deepen knowledge of neurological and musculoskeletal conditions, helping students apply evidence-based assessment and treatment strategies. Additional practice-based learning placements allow students to apply theory in real clinical environments and further strengthen clinical reasoning and patient-centred care skills.

Third Year:

In the final year, the curriculum emphasises advanced clinical and professional practice with modules such as Complexity in Physiotherapy Practice, Cardiorespiratory 2, and Practice-Based Learning 4 & 5. Students also undertake a Research Project that develops their research literacy and ability to apply evidence to physiotherapy practice, and Professional Development and Employability supports career readiness and ongoing professional growth. This year’s clinical placements and advanced teaching ensure graduates are prepared to work autonomously and collaboratively within multidisciplinary health teams.
