University of Southampton

Program Overview

The BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy at the University of Southampton prepares you to become a skilled and compassionate healthcare professional who can make a real difference in people’s lives. This program is ideal for students who want to combine science, problem-solving, and hands-on care to help patients recover movement, manage pain, and improve quality of life across all ages and conditions.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
You’ll begin by developing a solid grounding in human anatomy, physiology, and movement science. Modules like Structure and Function of the Human Body, Foundations of Physiotherapy Practice, and Health and Wellbeing in Context introduce how the body moves and how physiotherapy supports recovery. You’ll also start to apply theoretical learning in practical workshops and simulation sessions that mirror real healthcare environments.

Year 2
Your second year focuses on translating theory into clinical skills through modules such as Applied Physiotherapy Practice, Rehabilitation and Exercise Science, and Clinical Reasoning. You’ll spend a significant portion of your time on clinical placements within NHS hospitals and community settings, where you’ll work directly with patients under supervision. This year strengthens your confidence in assessment, diagnosis, and designing treatment plans for musculoskeletal, neurological, and respiratory conditions.

Year 3
In your final year, you’ll refine your advanced clinical and research skills, taking more responsibility in patient management during extended placements. Modules such as Complex Case Management and Evidence-Based Physiotherapy help you integrate research into professional practice. You’ll also complete a Research Dissertation, conducting an in-depth study on a physiotherapy-related topic, preparing you for professional registration and employment after graduation.
