University of Bristol

Program Overview

The BVSc Gateway to Veterinary Science at the University of Bristol is a six-year programme designed to support students with the potential to become excellent veterinary surgeons, but who may not yet meet the standard entry requirements. The gateway year provides a strong academic and professional foundation, before you progress into the full veterinary science degree with the skills, confidence, and preparation needed to succeed.

Curriculum Structure

Gateway Year (Year 0):
The gateway year focuses on building core scientific knowledge and essential study skills for veterinary education. You’ll strengthen your understanding of biology and chemistry, develop academic confidence, and gain insight into the veterinary profession, ensuring you are fully prepared to progress into Year 1 of the BVSc programme.

Year 1:
Your first year of the degree introduces the foundations of veterinary science through modules such as Animal Structure and Function, Foundations of Veterinary Science, and Professional and Clinical Skills. You’ll begin learning animal handling, ethics, and welfare alongside key scientific principles.

Year 2:
In Year 2, learning becomes more applied as you explore disease processes and animal health across species. Subjects such as Pathology, Infection and Immunity, and Principles of Veterinary Practice help link scientific theory with real clinical understanding.

Year 3:
This year focuses on diagnostics, pharmacology, and population health. Through modules like Clinical Veterinary Science, Pharmacology and Therapeutics, and Population Medicine, you’ll develop clinical reasoning and decision-making skills.

Year 4:
Your fourth year moves into advanced clinical teaching, covering small animal, farm animal, and equine medicine. You’ll gain significant hands-on experience through practical sessions and clinical exposure in professional settings.

Year 5:
The final year is a full clinical placement year, where you work alongside experienced veterinary professionals in real practice environments. This immersive year prepares you for professional registration and entry into veterinary practice.
