BA Hons Accounting and Finance and Mathematics

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Liverpool Hope University

Program Overview

This BA (Hons) combines the analytical rigour of mathematics with practical knowledge in accounting and finance, giving students a strong foundation in numerical reasoning, financial management, and business decision-making. It is ideal for students who enjoy numbers, problem-solving, and want flexibility to pursue careers in finance, analytics, accounting, banking, or business consultancy.

Curriculum structure

Year 1
The first year introduces foundational modules in mathematics (such as calculus, algebra, statistics) alongside introductory accounting and finance modules. Students gain essential quantitative skills while understanding basic principles of financial accounting, management accounting, and business economics, preparing them for more advanced topics.

Year 2
In the second year, students advance in mathematics with modules in applied mathematics, mathematical modelling, probability, and statistics, while studying intermediate accounting and finance topics such as corporate finance, financial reporting, and taxation. Analytical, problem-solving and data interpretation skills are developed alongside an understanding of business processes and financial systems.

Year 3 (Honours Year)
The final year integrates advanced mathematics with specialised accounting and finance modules. Students may study advanced statistics, financial analysis, portfolio management, and risk assessment, while completing a dissertation or project that combines mathematical and financial analysis. This year consolidates theoretical knowledge and applies it to real-world financial and business scenarios.

Focus areas

Mathematics (pure and applied); financial accounting; management accounting; corporate finance; statistics and probability; mathematical modelling; data analysis; risk management; financial decision-making; integration of quantitative and business skills.

Learning outcomes

Graduates will be able to analyse and interpret financial data, apply mathematical reasoning to business problems, make informed financial decisions, model quantitative scenarios, and communicate complex information effectively. They will also have a versatile skillset suitable for careers in finance, banking, business consultancy, accounting, analytics, or further postgraduate study.

Professional alignment (accreditation)

The combination of mathematics with accounting and finance equips graduates for roles requiring analytical and financial expertise. While professional accounting accreditation depends on specific modules taken, the degree prepares students for further professional qualifications such as ACCA, CIMA or CFA after graduation.

Reputation & Career/Relevance Potential

Graduates are highly employable in sectors that value both quantitative and financial expertise, including banking, investment, corporate finance, business analytics, accounting, and consulting. The programme equips students with strong problem-solving and analytical skills, making them competitive for both technical and management career paths.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This combined honours degree blends Accounting & Finance with Mathematics, giving students a strong foundation in both business-finance and quantitative analytical skills. Graduates emerge with dual competencies, making them highly versatile and well-prepared for a wide range of careers.

Who This Program Suits

This degree is ideal for students who:

  • Enjoy both mathematics (problem-solving, logical reasoning, statistics) and finance/business

  • Want a qualification that opens multiple career paths

  • Are ready to manage the workload of two demanding fields

  • Wish to graduate with skills that are highly valued across sectors

What You Learn

Accounting & Finance

  • Core principles of accounting and finance, including financial statements, corporate finance, and business decision-making

  • Practical and applied knowledge preparing you for real-world financial environments

  • Insight into business, management, and finance sectors

Mathematics

  • Core topics including calculus, algebra, statistics, mathematical modelling, and numerical methods

  • Quantitative and problem-solving skills to complement finance and accounting

  • Exposure to statistical and computational tools for real-world data analysis and modelling

Assessment combines exams, coursework, and practical projects to ensure students develop competence in both subjects.

Experiential Learning

Students gain practical and applied experience throughout the degree:

  • Working on financial case studies and accounting projects

  • Applying mathematical models to solve business and finance problems

  • Developing analytical, computational, and problem-solving skills

  • Participating in workshops and tutorials to strengthen understanding and practical application

This combined approach ensures graduates are confident in both quantitative reasoning and business-financial contexts.

Career Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates are well-equipped for careers such as:

  • Finance, banking, accountancy, auditing, and financial analysis

  • Data analysis, risk analysis, financial modelling, and quantitative finance

  • Business consultancy, management, and corporate strategy

  • Postgraduate study or professional qualifications (e.g., finance or accounting certifications)

  • Roles in sectors requiring strong analytical, numerical, and business skills

This dual-focus degree also offers flexibility, allowing graduates to shift between finance, mathematics, analytics, and business domains as their career evolves.

Why This Degree is a Strong Fit

This programme is perfect for students who want a versatile, career-ready degree that develops both mathematical sophistication and financial expertise. It’s especially suited to those seeking a strong analytical foundation alongside practical business skills, providing a competitive edge in multiple sectors.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates with a combined Accounting & Finance + Mathematics degree often secure roles that leverage both their numerical/analytical strength and financial/business acumen — such as financial analyst, accountant, auditor, risk analyst, data-driven finance professional, or business consultant. Many also go into quantitative finance, actuarial work, banking, or corporate finance. Others may use the strong mathematical base to move into data science, analytics, or IT-related roles in finance-heavy sectors.

Progression & Future Opportunities

  • Strong analytical + financial foundation: The degree gives rigorous training in mathematics (calculus, statistics, probability, modelling) as well as solid grounding in accounting, finance, and financial management. This makes graduates versatile: able to understand complex financial data, build models, and interpret business metrics with confidence.

  • Wide and diverse career paths: Graduates have gone on to work as accountants, auditors, financial analysts, investment analysts, banking professionals, risk & credit analysts, consultancy, and business-analysis roles.

  • Strong demand for numerate finance specialists: Employers value the dual skill set — robust mathematics and finance/accounting — because it enables graduates to handle quantitative tasks (modelling, forecasting, risk assessment) as well as business/financial reporting and strategic decision-making.

  • Employability & graduate-destination record: Graduates of this type of combined programme generally show high employment or further study rates within 15 months of graduation, reflecting the degree’s relevance and value to employers.

  • Flexibility and transferable skills: The combination strengthens career flexibility — whether following a finance/business path or a more quantitative, analytics, data-driven route. Skills like problem-solving, quantitative reasoning, data analysis, financial literacy, and logical thinking are transferable across sectors: finance, business, data science, risk management, insurance, banking, consulting, IT, and public sector economics or policy roles.

Further Academic Progression

After graduating, students could:

  • Pursue a master’s degree in finance, financial analysis, actuarial science, econometrics, data science, business analytics, or applied mathematics — deepening either quantitative or business expertise (or both).

  • Opt for professional finance/accounting certifications or credentials (e.g., chartered accountancy, financial analysis credentials, actuarial exams), with the strong math background enhancing suitability for finance, risk, investment, or actuarial tracks.

  • Aim for specialized roles combining mathematics and finance: quantitative analyst, risk management specialist, financial modeller, or corporate finance strategist.
