MPhys Physics

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Aberystwyth University

Program Overview

Aberystwyth’s MPhys Physics is a four-year integrated master’s program designed for students who want to explore the full depth of physical science — from classical mechanics to quantum theory — while preparing for careers in research, technology, or advanced study.

It’s ideal for curious minds who enjoy solving complex problems and want to develop both theoretical insight and practical expertise across a broad range of physics topics.

Curriculum structure

Year 1: Core Foundations in Physics and Mathematics
You’ll begin with Mathematics for Physicists, Classical Dynamics, and Thermal and Quantum Physics, gaining a strong grounding in the laws that govern motion, energy, and atomic behaviour. Practical skills are developed through Laboratory Physics and Introduction to Programming, while Fundamentals of Engineering Mechanics introduces structural analysis and applied problem-solving.

Year 2: Expanding Technical Depth and Specialisation
This year includes Electromagnetism and Optoelectronics, Solid State Physics, and Mathematical Methods, deepening your understanding of physical systems and analytical techniques. You’ll also study Space Instrumentation, learning how to design and interpret experiments for space-based applications.

Year 3: Advanced Topics and Independent Research
You’ll take Quantum Mechanics, Statistical Physics, and complete a Major Project in a specialist area such as instrumentation, theoretical modelling, or applied physics. This year consolidates your academic development and introduces you to independent research.

Year 4: Integrated Master’s Year
In your final year, you’ll undertake a substantial Master’s Research Project, working closely with academic staff on cutting-edge topics. You’ll also take advanced modules in theoretical physics, data analysis, and computational methods tailored to your research focus.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Aberystwyth’s MPhys Physics program offers students hands-on experience in experimental physics, space instrumentation, and computational modelling — all supported by specialist labs, research-led teaching, and a master’s-level research project.

From your first year, you’ll work with experimental setups, write code, and explore physical systems using tools and facilities designed for advanced physics. You’ll also engage in group projects, lab work, and independent research guided by experts involved in space missions. Here’s how experiential learning is built into the course:

  • Laboratory Techniques for Experimental Physicists and Engineers (30 credits) develops practical skills in optics, electronics, and instrumentation.
  • Space Instrumentation teaches how to design, build, and interpret data from space-based experiments.
  • Python programming is taught through Introduction to Programming, supporting data analysis and simulation.
  • Major Project in Year 3 and Master’s Research Project in Year 4 involve supervised research in areas like quantum theory, instrumentation, or applied physics.
  • Use of digital platforms such as Blackboard for simulations, assignments, and collaborative learning.
  • Access to Physics Laboratories for experimental modules and project work.
  • Aberystwyth researchers are involved in the European Space Agency’s ExoMars 2020 Project, offering insight into planetary exploration and instrumentation.
  • University Library and Physical Sciences collections provide access to journals, textbooks, and specialist databases.
  • Institute of Physics (IOP) accreditation ensures alignment with professional standards and supports long-term career progression.
