Philosophy, Politics and Economics BA

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Leeds

Program Overview

The BA Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) at the University of Leeds is designed for curious thinkers who want to understand how societies work and how ideas shape real-world decisions. By combining moral philosophy, political systems, and economic theory, this degree builds your critical thinking and analytical skills while giving you the flexibility to shape your studies around what interests you most.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 – Building Your Foundation:
You’ll start by exploring the core ideas of each discipline through modules like Economic Theory and Applications, Comparative Politics, and Philosophy for PPE. These courses introduce you to the fundamentals of how governments operate, how economies function, and how ethical thinking influences decision-making, while also strengthening your mathematical and analytical skills.

Year 2 – Deepening Your Expertise:
In your second year, you’ll go deeper into economic principles with Microeconomics and Macroeconomics, and tackle big questions in political and moral philosophy. You’ll also choose from engaging modules such as Revolutionary Political Thought or Justice and Conflict, allowing you to explore the complex issues shaping societies and policies today.

Year 3 – Specialising and Shaping Your Future:
Your final year is your chance to specialise. You’ll complete a Final Year Project (dissertation) in your chosen area and tailor your studies with advanced options like Feminist Philosophy, War, Terror and Justice, Politics of National Identity, or Climate Emergency. This year is all about applying what you’ve learned to the issues you care about most.

Focus areas: Interdisciplinary thinking, ethical reasoning, political institutions, economic modelling, public policy, and social research

Learning outcomes: Graduates develop sharp critical thinking, strong quantitative skills, independent research ability, persuasive argumentation, and the confidence to connect theory with real-world challenges.

Professional alignment (accreditation): While not a professionally accredited degree, PPE’s balance of theory and data-driven skills prepares you for impactful careers in government, policy, finance, consultancy, NGOs, or law.

Reputation (employability rankings): Leeds is a prestigious Russell Group university, ranked among the world’s top 100. Its social sciences and business departments are highly regarded, and PPE graduates often move into influential roles shaping public policy and business decisions.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Leeds, the Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) degree is built around the idea that you learn best by doing, not just reading. From the very start, you’ll apply ideas to real-world issues, work on projects that mirror professional practice, and use the same tools and resources experts rely on in government, research, and policy. Whether it’s through placements, study abroad, or interactive classes, the program is designed to help you graduate with practical skills that employers value.

You’ll explore how political decisions are made, how economic models guide policy, and how philosophical thinking shapes real debates — all while developing hands-on experience. The university’s exceptional libraries, collaborative learning spaces, and digital tools make it easy to dive deep into research and tackle complex projects. And with opportunities to gain real workplace experience or study overseas, you’ll build a résumé that stands out long before graduation.

Here’s how Leeds brings your PPE learning to life:

  • Work Placement module: Gain real-world experience by working with an organisation related to politics, policy, economics, or social research — and reflect on how theory connects with practice.

  • Study abroad opportunities: Spend a semester or year at a partner university in countries like France, Denmark, Spain, or Greece to broaden your global perspective and strengthen your academic profile.

  • Digital and research tools: Use platforms like Excel and specialist databases to analyse data and explore economic and political trends.

  • Collaborative learning: Take part in seminars, group projects, and interactive debates designed to sharpen your teamwork, presentation, and problem-solving skills.

  • World-class libraries and archives: Access the Brotherton, Laidlaw, and Edward Boyle libraries, home to extensive collections, digital archives, and primary sources for political and economic research.

  • Modern learning spaces: Study and collaborate in tech-equipped classrooms and project spaces with visualisers, interactive tools, and dedicated PPE resources.
