Law with Business Law - LLB (Hons)

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Birmingham City University

Program Overview

The LLB Law with Business at Birmingham City University gives you the best of both worlds: a full qualifying law degree while also building a strong understanding of how business actually works. This course is ideal if you want a legal career that goes beyond the courtroom and opens doors into corporate, commercial or business-focused roles.

 Curriculum Structure

Year 1

In your first year, you’ll build your legal foundation by exploring areas such as Legal Systems, Tort Law, Contract Law, Consumer and Agency Law, and the basics of legal reasoning. You’ll learn how the legal system operates, how legal principles are applied, and how to think and analyse like a future lawyer.

Year 2

In the second year, you start developing a stronger link between law and business. You’ll study Land Law, Criminal Law, Business Law, and also explore areas such as Constitutional and Administrative Law. You can begin shaping your interests through options like Employment Law or Alternative Dispute Resolution depending on whether you’re leaning towards HR, corporate advisory, commercial law, or people-focused legal practice.

Year 3 (Final Year)

By your final year, you’ll move into advanced and applied areas including Equity and Trusts, Legal Technology, Competition Law, and European Union Law. You can choose a major project or specialist module depending on your interests — whether that’s commercial law, legal research, global business law or hands-on practice. By the time you graduate, you’ll have built both a legal skillset and the business insight that employers really value.

Focus Areas

Commercial law, company law, legal technology, business law, property law, competition law, UK legal foundations, and equity and trusts.

 Learning Outcomes

You’ll graduate able to apply legal principles to real situations, interpret business and commercial law, solve legal problems, think like a professional lawyer, and understand how law works within corporate structures and commercial environments.

 Professional Alignment

This degree meets the academic requirements for progressing toward becoming a solicitor or barrister in the UK, while also preparing you for business and commercial roles if you decide to pursue a corporate career instead of traditional legal practice.

 Reputation & Employability

BCU is strongly focused on real-world practice and employability, and the combination of business knowledge and legal training gives you a head-start when applying to law firms, companies, legal departments, commercial organisations, or compliance roles. Many students also choose a professional placement year to gain hands-on experience before graduating.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Studying Law with Business at BCU is not just about reading textbooks — it’s about getting your hands on real-world legal and business challenges. From the very start, you’ll have opportunities to apply what you learn, work with real cases, practise professional skills, and understand how law and business intersect in practice. The course is designed to help you gain confidence, develop problem-solving skills, and see how law operates both in the courtroom and in the boardroom.

Here’s how this practical learning comes to life:

  • Law Clinic experience: Work on real cases under supervision, helping clients with issues ranging from employment disputes and contracts to consumer law, giving you a taste of genuine legal practice.

  • Professional placements: Optional sandwich year opportunities let you spend a year working with law firms, corporate legal teams, or NGOs, gaining hands-on experience that enhances your CV.

  • Shadowing and work experience: You can observe legal professionals, including solicitors and barristers, to see firsthand how cases are managed and how business law is applied.

  • Student-led societies and activities: Join groups like the Mooting Society, Legal Society, or Debating Society to practise courtroom skills, legal argument, and public speaking in a supportive environment.

  • Modern facilities: Learn in the Curzon Building with simulated courtrooms, collaborative study spaces, and a fully-equipped law library, giving you the tools to combine theory with practice.

  • Specialist software and digital tools: Use legal databases and business-related platforms to research, analyse, and manage cases and projects, preparing you for the tech-driven aspects of modern legal work.

Altogether, this means your LLB Law with Business degree is not just about understanding law on paper — you’ll gain real experience, build professional confidence, and be ready to step into your career equipped with both legal knowledge and business insight.
