Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

You’ll join “student law firms” that tackle real legal problems, using dedicated problem-based learning spaces and a mock courtroom that mirrors professional practice. York Law School provides the tools, facilities, and guidance you need to develop legal reasoning, teamwork, advocacy, and professional reflection in a hands-on, practical environment.

Here’s how your learning comes to life:

  • Student Law Firm & Problem-Based Learning (PBL) Suite: Each week, you’ll work in a small team acting as a student law firm, tackling complex legal cases in tutor-led workshops. You’ll learn how to analyse problems, apply the law, and build professional relationships in a realistic setting.

  • Mock Courtroom & Coursework Simulations: Practice legal advocacy, structure and present arguments, and participate in workshops that mirror the work of junior solicitors or barristers.

  • Virtual Learning Environment & Legal Skills Modules: Access online lectures, collaborate digitally with peers, and build your professional portfolio while reflecting on your own progress outside the classroom.

  • Career-Focused Activities & Professional Skills Development: The Law School’s Careers & Development programme connects you with local, national, and international legal employers, offering mentoring, one-to-one guidance, workshops, and work-based learning opportunities.

Progression & Future Opportunities

After completing this two-year senior status law degree, you’ll be ready to step confidently into a range of meaningful legal careers, such as solicitor, barrister, legal consultant, or corporate compliance lawyer. With the strong practical experience and academic knowledge you’ll gain, you’ll be well-prepared to work in law firms, in-house legal teams, public sector organisations, or policy and advisory roles:

  • Career support services: York Law School’s Careers & Development Programme offers one-to-one guidance, CV and interview workshops, mentoring, and tailored employability support to help you transition smoothly into the professional world.

  • Employment outcomes & salary outlook: Around 92.5% of University of York graduates are in work or further study within 15 months of finishing their degree, reflecting the strong employability of its alumni.

  • University–industry partnerships: The Law School connects you to local, national, and international legal employers through Link Days, alumni events, and integrated work experience opportunities, giving you valuable professional exposure.

  • Long-term accreditation value: This qualification meets the academic stage requirements for the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and Bar Standards Board (BSB), keeping your pathway open for professional legal training and practice in England & Wales.

  • Graduation outcomes: Graduates often move into legal practice, advocacy, public policy, or advisory roles, benefiting from a combination of legal knowledge, practical skills, and strong career support.

Further Academic Progression:
After completing your degree, you could continue your studies with a Master’s in law (LLM) or a specialised legal practice programme, or step into professional training such as the Legal Practice Course (LPC) or Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC). These paths help you deepen your expertise, access advanced legal roles, and build a strong foundation for a successful legal career.
