Year 1

In your first year, you build a solid foundation in how legal systems work and learn key skills needed for legal study. You’ll explore modules such as Legal Methods, Introduction to Legal Reasoning, and Law and Society, which help you understand how laws are made, interpreted and applied in real contexts.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At the University of Stirling, the BA (Hons) Law programme is built around practical, hands-on learning that prepares you for the realities of modern legal work. From your first year, you’re encouraged to engage with real cases, develop advocacy skills, and work with digital legal tools that reflect today’s professional environment. The Law School blends traditional legal education with practical training through specialist facilities, simulated courtroom experiences, and opportunities to work directly with organisations and practitioners.

Here’s how you gain real, career-shaping experience throughout your degree:

  • Specialist Moot Courtroom: You’ll regularly practise advocacy, argumentation and legal procedure in Stirling’s purpose-built moot courtroom, where students rehearse real-world legal scenarios and gain confidence in presenting cases.

  • Pro Bono & Community Projects: The Law School runs pro bono initiatives that allow students to contribute to community-focused legal support under supervision — a valuable opportunity to gain practical insight while helping people.

  • Legal Research & Digital Skills Training: Throughout your modules, you'll work with professional legal databases, case-analysis software and research platforms used widely in the legal industry.

  • Group Projects & Case-Study Learning: Many modules include collaborative tasks where you analyse legal problems, draft documents and debate solutions as a team — mirroring the way lawyers work in practice.

  • Guest Lectures from Practitioners: You’ll regularly learn from solicitors, advocates, judges and policy experts who share current industry insights and discuss real cases and career pathways.

  • Stirling Law Review: Students have the chance to write, edit or review submissions for the Stirling Law Review, giving you hands-on experience in legal writing, academic research and publication.

  • Work Placement & Internship Support: The Careers and Employability Service connects law students with placement opportunities across Scotland, including local firms, NGOs, public sector departments and corporate legal teams.

  • Dedicated Law Library Resources: You’ll have access to extensive legal texts, journals and databases through the university’s library, including quiet study areas and staff support for specialised legal research.

  • International Exposure Opportunities: While not required, students can apply for study-abroad or exchange programmes, allowing them to experience comparative legal systems and broaden their global understanding.
