Program Overview

The LLB Law with Foundation Year is ideal for students who want to build a strong legal foundation before diving into a full law degree. It’s designed for those who may not yet meet traditional entry requirements, offering a supportive start while developing the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to succeed in law.

Curriculum Structure

Foundation Year (Year 0): This preparatory year helps you get up to speed with core academic skills, legal concepts, and study techniques. Modules such as Introduction to Law, Academic Skills, and English for Academic Purposes ensure you gain the confidence and knowledge to thrive in the full LLB program.

Year 2: You’ll study more specialised areas, including Equity and Trusts, Public Law, and European Law. Optional modules allow you to begin tailoring your degree to your interests, exploring areas like human rights, commercial law, or criminology.

Year 3: The final year focuses on advanced legal topics and independent research. Modules such as Advanced Legal Studies, Dispute Resolution, and a dissertation or independent project enable you to specialise, develop expertise, and demonstrate your ability to analyse complex legal issues.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

When you study LLB Law at Aberystwyth University, you won’t just learn about laws from textbooks — you’ll use real-world tools, work on actual cases, and build practical legal skills that set you up for the profession. The small but dynamic Law & Criminology department has a rich tradition (teaching Law since 1901), and you’ll be surrounded by passionate tutors and peers who care about helping you succeed.

You’ll get access to modern facilities — a superb law library, specialist legal databases, and dedicated computer labs — that make researching legal topics (whether for assignments or moots) easy and efficient. Plus, from your very first year, you’ll have chances to get involved in law-related projects, work placements, and student-led activities that give you a flavour of what a real legal career is like.

Here’s how you’ll bring your degree to life with practical, hands-on experience:

  • Work placements & real case-work: You’ll have the option of a work placement module in different areas of law — a great way to build real legal experience even before you graduate.

  • Legal clinics & volunteering: There’s a Family Law Clinic where students do case-work under guidance, plus projects like the “Dewis/Choice” initiative (focused on elder-abuse) and the Veterans Legal Link Project, giving you a chance to contribute meaningfully to real social issues.

  • Mooting and advocacy practice: Through the Mooting Society you’ll take part in mock trials — sharpening your research, argumentation and public-speaking skills in a realistic courtroom-style environment.

  • Strong library & research infrastructure: The campus library (with a dedicated law section), thousands of electronic journals, and top-tier legal databases give you everything you need to study international, commercial and human-rights law thoroughly.

  • Flexible and modern teaching: You’ll study foundational and specialist law modules, with a curriculum designed to be employer-ready — giving you the option to tailor your degree to your interests in human rights, commercial law, criminal law or other areas.

  • Pathway to professional qualification: This degree is recognised by the relevant legal professional bodies in England & Wales — after graduation you’ll be well placed to move into professional training (for example to qualify as a solicitor or barrister).
