Program Overview

The Bachelor of Laws (LLB) is the primary route for those aspiring to become professional solicitors. Accredited by the Law Society of Scotland, this program provides a strong foundation in the legal system and laws of Scotland, equipping students with essential legal knowledge and skills.

Throughout the course, you will explore key areas of private, public, criminal, and commercial law, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of Scotland’s legal framework. The curriculum is designed to enhance critical thinking, legal research, and practical problem-solving abilities, preparing students for a successful legal career.

From the second year onward, students have the option to specialize in risk management, leading to a final degree of LLB Bachelor of Laws with Risk. With risk management playing a crucial role in legal practice, this pathway provides additional expertise in assessing and mitigating legal risks, opening doors to diverse career opportunities in the growing field of legal compliance and risk assessment.

⚖️ 1. The Law Clinic

The GCU Law Clinic provides free and confidential legal advice to individuals in the Greater Glasgow community who do not qualify for legal aid and cannot afford professional legal services. Specializing in areas such as housing, employment, contract, and sports law, the clinic offers students the opportunity to:​GCU

🏛️ 2. Mooting and Advocacy

GCU encourages students to engage in mooting competitions, which involve arguing fictional legal cases in a simulated court environment. 📁 3. Research Projects and Dissertation

In their final year, law students undertake a dissertation, allowing them to conduct in-depth research on a legal topic of their choice. This project develops critical thinking, analytical, and academic writing skills, preparing students for potential postgraduate study or research-oriented careers.​


🌍 4. Study Abroad and Exchange Programs

GCU offers study abroad opportunities through exchange programs with partner institutions in countries such as Poland, Cyprus, Malta, Germany, Austria, Belgium, and the USA (University of Tennessee). These programs enable students to experience different legal systems and cultures, broadening their academic and personal horizons.

  • Solicitor: Graduates can progress to the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) route, supported by GCU’s focus on practical legal skills and professional preparation.

  • Barrister: Students aiming to become barristers can take a Bar Training Course (BTC) and apply for pupillage.

  • Other legal roles include paralegal, legal assistant, caseworker, or court clerk.
