LLB Law with Study Abroad

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Bristol

Program Overview

The LLB Law with Study Abroad at Bristol gives you the full strength of a traditional law degree, with the added advantage of spending your third year at one of the university’s international partner institutions. You’ll learn from respected academics in Bristol, then experience a completely new legal culture abroad — whether that’s in places like Singapore, Japan, Mexico, or Australia — giving you a global perspective that really stands out in today’s legal world.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

Your first year builds the foundations every lawyer needs. You’ll study Contract Law, Criminal Law, Public Law and Tort, while also developing key skills like legal research, structured reasoning and effective writing. It’s all about helping you think like a lawyer from day one.

Year 2

In your second year, you move into more advanced core areas such as Land Law, EU Law and Trusts. Alongside these, you get to choose optional modules that reflect your interests — whether that’s Human Rights, Commercial Law, Environmental Law, or another area you want to explore in depth.

Year 3 — Study Abroad

Your third year is spent overseas at a partner university. You’ll study law within a different legal system, possibly in a new language, giving you valuable cultural insight and global awareness. This year abroad broadens your thinking and adds international experience to your CV.

Year 4 — Final Year Back at Bristol

When you return to Bristol, you’ll have the freedom to shape your degree with a wide range of optional units — from Banking & Commercial Law to IT Law, Human Rights or Environmental Law. You’ll also complete a 5,000-word Independent Research Project on a legal topic you genuinely care about.

Focus Areas : Global legal systems, international and comparative law, core English law foundations, commercial and human rights law, and advanced legal research skills.

Learning Outcomes : By the time you graduate, you’ll be able to analyse complex issues clearly, argue confidently, and apply legal principles in both UK and international contexts. You’ll also gain strong research abilities and hands-on experience that prepares you for real legal practice.

Professional Alignment : This degree fully supports the pathway towards qualifying as a solicitor through the SQE or progressing to the Bar Practice Course. Through Bristol’s law clinics and practical work opportunities, you’ll gain early exposure to real clients and meaningful legal work.

Reputation & Employability : Bristol Law School has an excellent reputation, particularly for its research and its strong links with the legal profession. The curriculum is built around the core knowledge required for professional training, and many graduates move into top law firms, secure pupillages, or pursue roles in business, government and international organisations.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Bristol, studying law goes far beyond the classroom. You’ll get the chance to apply what you learn through real cases, hands-on projects, and opportunities that help you build confidence in genuine legal settings. Whether you’re helping clients, exploring human rights issues, or gaining experience overseas, the Law School gives you the practical exposure you need to grow into a well-rounded future lawyer.

Here’s how those experiences come to life:

  • Bristol Law Clinic: You can work directly with real clients on issues like housing, employment or welfare benefits, all under the guidance of qualified solicitors. It’s a great way to understand how the law affects people day-to-day.

  • Human Rights Law Clinic: Through the Human Rights Implementation Centre, you’ll work on active international human rights cases — from writing reports to collaborating with partner organisations. It’s ideal if you’re passionate about global justice.

  • International Internships: As part of the Law School’s internship scheme, you can complete at least 50 hours of law-related work overseas or in your home country. Exceptional students can also be recognised with awards or prizes.

  • Mentoring: You’ll have access to personalised mentoring from the Law School’s employability team, helping you develop your professional network and get guidance from people who understand the legal sector.

  • Qualifying Work Experience (QWE): Bristol supports you in gaining recognised QWE through clinics and internships — a valuable head start if you’re planning to qualify as a solicitor or move into other professional routes.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduating from this programme sets you up for a wide range of legal careers — whether you see yourself as a solicitor, barrister, legal advisor or even working in policy. What makes this degree especially powerful is the international element: your year abroad gives you a global perspective that employers in the UK and beyond genuinely value. It’s a combination that opens doors in law firms, NGOs, businesses, government and international organisations.

Here’s how Bristol helps you move confidently into your future:

  • Careers & Employability Support: The Law School’s specialist careers team offers one-to-one guidance, skills workshops, and networking opportunities with alumni and leading legal employers.

  • Hands-on Work Experience: You can gain recognised Qualifying Work Experience (QWE) through the Bristol Law Clinic and the Human Rights Law Clinic, giving you supervised, real-world legal exposure before you even graduate.

  • International Internship Scheme: Bristol’s internship programme lets you complete 50+ hours of paid, law-related experience abroad or in your home country — with the chance to earn recognition or awards for standout work.

  • University Careers Service: You’ll also benefit from the wider careers team, which connects students with hundreds of employers each year and supports internships, vacation schemes, and early career planning.

  • Strong Long-Term Value: Bristol is consistently one of the most targeted universities by top UK graduate employers, which gives you a real advantage when applying for competitive roles in major law firms or other sectors.

  • Professional Pathway: Your degree aligns directly with the route to becoming a solicitor or barrister, and your international experience gives you an added edge when exploring global or cross-border legal work.

Further Academic Progression:

After your LLB, you have plenty of options if you want to keep studying. You can move into a specialist LLM, explore areas like international or comparative law, or take on a joint master’s programme. If you’re interested in academic research or teaching, pathways such as an MPhil or PhD are also available.
