4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
If you want to study law but don’t yet meet the typical entry requirements, this Law with Foundation Year course gives you a supportive, well-structured launch pad into legal studies — letting you build foundational knowledge, skills and confidence before moving on to the full LLB. It’s ideal for students who need that extra preparation or want a gentler start before diving into the full degree.
Curriculum Structure
Foundation Year (Year 0)
In this preparatory year, you’ll be introduced to the basic building blocks of the English legal system. You’ll study modules such as Principles of the English Legal System, Contract Law, Criminal Law, Human Rights, Law of Torts, and a comprehensive Advocacy and Legal Drafting module. This means you’ll not only learn legal theory but also start practising practical skills — drafting legal documents, preparing arguments, and applying the law in mock hearings — so you’re ready for full-level degree work.
Years 1–3 (LLB proper)
Once you’ve completed the foundation year successfully, you’ll move on to the full LLB (Hons). In the first year of LLB you’ll cover core areas like Tort Actions, Constitutional Principles (UK & EU), Contract Law, and other foundational modules that deepen your understanding of law as a whole. As you progress you’ll begin to specialise: later years allow optional and elective modules (for example in commercial law, local government law, or other areas), giving you the flexibility to tailor your studies toward what interests you most.
Focus areas: foundational English legal system, contract & criminal law, human rights, torts; plus advocacy and legal drafting skills; followed by core LLB law topics and optional specializations.
Learning outcomes: a thorough grounding in legal principles; practical skills in legal drafting, analysis, and advocacy; ability to understand and apply law; solid readiness for higher-level legal studies or entry into legal-related work.
Professional alignment (accreditation): the course leads into the standard LLB (Hons), which qualifies graduates for those routes in legal training (e.g. further professional legal training in the UK).
Reputation (employability / student satisfaction): The wider law programmes at Hertfordshire are highly regarded — with strong student satisfaction rankings and excellent facilities supporting practical learning and employability.
At Hertfordshire, your law degree isn’t just about reading textbooks — you’ll actually step into the shoes of a lawyer from very early on. The programme gives you access to real-life legal settings, client-facing work, and professional-style simulations, so that by the time you graduate you’ve already built substantial practical experience.
You’ll benefit from well-equipped facilities and opportunities such as:
A full-scale replica Crown Courtroom, where you can practise courtroom advocacy, mooting, mock trials and trial simulations.
The award-winning Law Clinic, where you partner with qualified solicitors and barristers to give free legal advice to real clients on matters like housing, employment, family law, commercial issues — giving you hands-on experience in interviewing, legal research, case analysis, drafting, and client communication.
Volunteer and pro-bono initiatives (like outreach projects, “Streetlaw” community education sessions, and support-at-court services) — so you get real exposure to working with a diverse public, sharpening your social-justice awareness, empathy, and communication skills.
Small-group classes and interactive teaching by practising solicitors, barristers and a judge — meaning your learning is grounded in real legal practice, not just theory.
Opportunities to take part in mooting, trial advocacy, mediation and national/international legal competitions — valuable chances to test yourself against peers from other universities, build confidence, and stand out to future employers.
Access to modern study resources: well-stocked law-focused libraries and online legal databases (for research work), quiet study rooms, and group/project spaces for collaboration.
Completing the Law with Foundation Year (West Herts College) at Hertfordshire opens doors quickly — you’ll graduate with the full academic foundation of a law degree, plus the practical confidence to start building your career right away. Many students move into legal roles within a year of graduating, taking advantage of the hands-on training, strong faculty support, and industry-focused approach the university is known for.
In terms of career possibilities, graduates typically explore roles such as paralegal, trainee solicitor, barrister’s assistant, and legal advisor in both the private and public sectors. The degree also prepares you well for compliance, HR, mediation, and policy-related careers, giving you flexibility depending on what path feels right for you. And with Hertfordshire’s strong employer links, you’ll be stepping into opportunities that genuinely match your goals:
Dedicated employability support: The university’s career services help you with CV building, interview prep, job applications, internships, and networking — making sure you feel confident and supported as you enter the job market.
Industry connections: Hertfordshire regularly connects students with regional and London-based law firms through employer events, law fairs, and skill workshops, giving you valuable exposure to real recruiters and professional networks.
Graduate outcomes: Recent stats show that the majority of graduates find work within 15 months of completing their law degree, with strong early-career employment in both legal and corporate fields.
Professional value: The programme includes pathways that can offer exemptions through professional bodies like CILEX, speeding up your route to qualifying in certain legal roles.
An early career start: Because this is an accelerated degree, you enter the workplace a whole year sooner than most law graduates — giving you a head start and more time to build experience.
Further Academic Progression:
If you decide to continue studying after the degree, you can move straight into professional training, such as preparing for the Solicitors Qualifying Examination or progressing to the Bar Practice Course. You can also explore master’s degrees in specialised legal areas, postgraduate research, or related professional qualifications in business, compliance, or public policy — depending on where you want your legal career to grow.
