The LLB (Hons) Law with Foundation Year at the University of Surrey is designed for students who want to study law but need an academic stepping stone before starting the full degree. It gives you a supportive introduction to university-level study while building your confidence, study skills, and understanding of core legal concepts — setting you up for success throughout the rest of your law degree.

Curriculum Structure

Foundation Year

Your foundation year helps you transition smoothly into university study. You’ll learn essential academic skills through modules such as Introduction to Law, Legal Skills, and Critical Thinking, while also developing your writing, research, and analytical abilities. This year ensures you feel fully prepared and confident before progressing into the main LLB programme.

Year 1

In your first official year of the LLB, you’ll build your legal foundations through core subjects like Contract Law, Criminal Law, Public Law, and Tort Law. These modules give you a clear understanding of how the legal system operates and introduce you to the principles that underpin everyday legal decisions.

Year 2

Your second year focuses on expanding and sharpening your legal knowledge. You’ll study key modules such as Land Law, Equity and Trusts, and Administrative Law, which help you understand how rights, property, and public powers are managed. You can also start exploring optional modules such as Environmental Law, European Human Rights Law, or Law & Economics to discover your interests.

Year 3

The final year allows you to specialise in areas you care about most. With options like Commercial Law, Intellectual Property Law, Medical Law, Family Law, Tax Law, and Child Law, you can tailor the degree to your career goals. Many students also choose the Law Dissertation, giving you the chance to research a topic in depth and strengthen your academic profile.

Further Academic Progression:

After completing your LLB, you can move directly into professional legal training — such as the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) route or preparation for barrister training. You also have the option to specialise further with a Master of Laws (LLM), pursue postgraduate study in areas like international law or human rights, or progress toward academic research and a PhD in law.
