BA Politics and Sociology with study aboard

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Exeter

Program Overview

If you’re curious about how societies are shaped, how governments work, and why people behave the way they do, this degree could be the perfect fit for you. The BA Politics & Sociology combines two powerful subjects, giving you the chance to explore political ideas, institutions, and debates alongside the study of social structures, culture, and everyday life.

Curriculum structure

Year 1
In your first year, you’ll get a strong introduction to both subjects. Through modules like Contemporary Society: Themes, Perspectives and Case Studies and Imagining Social Worlds, you’ll start thinking like a sociologist—asking questions about inequality, identity, and social change. On the politics side, you’ll study topics such as Comparative Politics or Power and Democracy, building an essential foundation in how political systems operate across the globe.

Year 2
Your second year lets you dig deeper into theories and methods, with modules like Knowing the Social World in sociology and Political Thought of Modernity in politics. At the same time, you’ll shape your studies through optional modules—perhaps looking at health and biomedicine, or tackling international issues like world economy, security studies, or global political theory. This balance of core and optional courses means you can focus on what excites you most.

Final Year (or Year 4 if you take a Study Abroad year)
By your final year, you’ll be able to specialise fully in the areas you’re passionate about. You could explore themes such as Gender and Society, Climate Justice, Populism and Democratic Politics, or Contemporary Capitalism. If you choose the Study Abroad pathway, you’ll spend your third year at a partner university overseas, giving you an international perspective before returning to Exeter for your final year.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

On this degree, you won’t just be studying ideas from a textbook—you’ll be putting them into practice. From learning how to handle real social data to simulating political debates and exploring the impact of policies, the programme is designed to give you the kind of practical experience that employers value. You’ll also have the chance to step outside the classroom through placements, field trips, and research opportunities, so you can see how politics and society play out in the real world.

Here are some of the hands-on experiences you can expect:

  • Work with specialist data tools in modules like Social Data Science and Data Analysis in Social Science, building skills in analysing surveys, statistics, and social trends.

  • Take part in group projects and policy simulations, where you’ll practice debating, drafting reports, and solving problems just like professionals in government, NGOs, or research roles.

  • Get involved in field trips and placements, which could include working on reports for external organisations or exploring political and social issues on the ground.

  • Make full use of Exeter’s award-winning library, digital collections, and IT facilities, which students praise for helping them research effectively and independently.

  • Connect with research centres and institutes, such as those focusing on regional studies or cultural change, giving you the chance to link your coursework to cutting-edge research.
