LLB Law with French Law

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Warwick

Program Overview

Warwick’s LLB Law with French Law is perfect for students who want a strong English law degree while also building real expertise in the French legal system. It’s especially suited to someone who enjoys languages, international perspectives, and the idea of studying abroad. Over four years, you’ll explore core areas of UK law, develop academic-level French, and spend a full year studying law at a French partner university — giving you a powerful cross-border legal profile.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

Your first year lays the foundations of becoming a lawyer. You’ll dive into major subjects like Criminal Law and Tort Law, learning how legal decisions are shaped, argued, and applied. Alongside this, you’ll take an Introduction to French Law and legal methodology (taught in French), which builds your confidence in legal French vocabulary, writing, and reasoning from the very beginning.

Year 2

In the second year, you deepen your understanding of English law through modules such as Constitutional & Administrative Law and Contract Law. At the same time, you continue studying French law, exploring how France’s civil-law system works and how it differs from the UK’s common-law approach. By the end of the year, you’re well prepared for your upcoming study abroad.

Year 3 — Study in France

Your third year takes place at one of Warwick’s partner universities in France. Here, you live and study like a French law student, taking modules approved by Warwick that cover areas such as civil law, public law, and European legal frameworks. This year hugely strengthens your language skills and gives you firsthand experience of a different legal culture.

Year 4

Returning to Warwick, you finish your degree with advanced modules in English law and a wide range of optional subjects — anything from Human Rights in Practice to Trusts Law or Corporate Tax. Many students also choose to complete a supervised research project, allowing them to explore a topic they’re passionate about in depth.

Focus Areas

English common law, French civil law, comparative legal systems, legal research and writing, public and private law, and bilingual legal analysis.

Learning Outcomes

You’ll graduate with the ability to think across two legal systems, research and argue cases in both English and French, and apply legal reasoning confidently in international or cross-border contexts.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

This degree is a qualifying law degree in England and Wales, meaning it meets the academic requirements for further solicitor or barrister training. The added French-law component gives you a distinct advantage for careers with international firms, European institutions, and organisations working across common-law and civil-law environments.

Reputation & Employability

Warwick Law School is known for its strong teaching, global outlook, and excellent graduate outcomes. The combination of English and French law makes you stand out to employers who value international expertise, language skills, and the ability to navigate more than one legal system.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

From day one, you won’t just be studying law in the abstract — you’ll be applying it. Warwick’s LLB Law with French Law is built to help you develop practical legal instincts while becoming confident in both English and French legal environments. You’ll learn through hands-on projects, bilingual workshops, real client-focused activities, and the cultural training you need to succeed in international legal careers. Plus, you’ll have access to specialist academic support, law-focused facilities, and a community that actively encourages you to use what you learn in real situations.

Here’s what that looks like in practice:

  • Bilingual Legal Modules & Workshops: Alongside your core English law modules, you’ll take French-taught classes such as Introduction to French Law and Methodology. These involve analysing French court decisions, working in groups, debating legal issues in French, and completing independent research — helping you build genuine legal fluency in another system.

  • Year Abroad in France: Your third year is spent at a partner university in France — typically in cities like Paris, Bordeaux, or Lille — where you take specialist French law modules. Living and studying there gives you an authentic understanding of the civil law tradition and French legal culture.

  • Supervised Project & Law Clinic Opportunities: In your final year, you’ll complete a supervised research project where you investigate a legal topic you truly care about, guided by an academic expert. You’ll also have opportunities to get involved in pro-bono work or clinic-style activities, giving you a closer look at how legal problem-solving works in real life.

  • Active Student Societies & Language Support: You can join student societies centred on French law, European law, and international legal issues. Warwick also offers support to help you strengthen your academic French, intercultural communication, and bilingual legal writing.

  • Interactive Learning & Digital Tools: Instead of relying only on lectures, your modules combine seminars, workshops, collaborative tasks, case studies, and reflective exercises — both in English and French. This helps you think like a lawyer, understand context, and apply theory with confidence.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduating from Warwick’s LLB Law with French Law gives you a strong foundation in both UK and French legal systems, along with practical experience gained through bilingual modules, clinics, and a year abroad. This unique combination equips you to step confidently into a range of legal and advisory roles, while standing out to international law firms, government bodies, or NGOs. Typical career paths include solicitor, barrister, legal advisor, policy analyst, and international legal consultant:

  • Dedicated Careers Support: Warwick Law School provides personalised guidance through the Senior Careers Consultant, offering one-on-one sessions, workshops, and insight events with leading legal employers.

  • Practical Work Experience: Students can gain experience through pro-bono clinics, supervised projects, mini-pupillages, and internships — both in the UK and abroad — building a strong professional portfolio before graduation.

  • Graduate Outcomes: Data shows that the majority of Warwick law graduates move into roles where their degree is essential or highly relevant, with early-career salaries typically ranging from £27,000–£35,000 depending on sector and experience.

  • Industry Connections & Partnerships: Warwick maintains strong ties with top law firms, international chambers, and public institutions, providing students with networking opportunities and career placement support.

  • Long-term Value & Accreditation: The degree prepares you for professional legal qualifications, including routes to qualify as a solicitor or barrister, and the international exposure enhances employability in cross-border legal roles.

Further Academic Progression:
After completing the LLB, you can continue your studies with an LLM in areas such as international law, European law, or human rights. For those interested in research or teaching, postgraduate research degrees (MPhil or PhD) are also possible, giving you flexibility to deepen expertise or specialise further in your chosen legal field.
