BSc in Biological Sciences With A Year Abroad

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of East Anglia

Program Overview

If you’re passionate about exploring how life works — from the tiniest molecules to entire ecosystems — this course is designed for you. At UEA, you’ll gain a broad foundation in the biological sciences, with the freedom to shape your studies as you go, and the incredible opportunity to spend a year abroad, adding a global edge to your degree.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
Your first year is all about building the basics. You’ll dive into Molecular Biology and Genetics, Cell Biology and Physiology, and Biodiversity, Evolution & Ecology. These modules give you a strong grounding in how living systems work, while maths, chemistry, and statistics sharpen your scientific toolkit.

Year 2
In second year, you’ll start tailoring your learning to your interests. Alongside core modules, you can choose options like microbiology, ecology, or physiology. This is also when you prepare for your Year Abroad — selecting modules that line up with what you’ll study overseas and getting ready for the adventure ahead.

Year 3 (Year Abroad)
This is where your degree takes you global. You’ll spend the year studying at a partner university abroad, exploring new ways of learning, immersing yourself in another culture, and gaining international perspectives on biology. It’s a year that helps you grow personally as much as academically.

Year 4
Returning to UEA, your final year is about going deeper. You’ll take advanced modules in your chosen area of biology and carry out an independent Research Project — either in the lab, in the field, or in data analysis. It’s your chance to specialise and showcase everything you’ve learned.

Focus areas : Molecular & cellular biology, ecology & evolution, microbiology, physiology, biodiversity, and environmental/global issues in biology.

Learning outcomes : You’ll graduate with strong scientific knowledge, hands-on lab and fieldwork experience, data analysis skills, and the confidence to communicate science clearly — plus the adaptability that comes from studying abroad.

Professional alignment (accreditation) : This degree is officially accredited by the Royal Society of Biology, giving you a qualification that’s trusted by employers and recognised across the biosciences sector.

Reputation (employability / rankings) : UEA is consistently ranked among the UK’s Top 30 for Biological Sciences (Times & Sunday Times Good University Guide). Its life sciences subjects are also highly placed in global rankings, and graduates go on to excellent career opportunities or further study soon after finishing their degree.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At UEA, studying Biological Sciences with a Year Abroad isn’t just about learning in lecture theatres — you’ll spend a lot of time getting hands-on. From your first year you’ll be in modern teaching labs, working with the same kinds of tools and techniques that professional scientists use. Being based at the Norwich Research Park, one of Europe’s largest centres for life sciences, means you’re surrounded by world-leading research and real opportunities to get involved. And with your Year Abroad, you’ll experience all of this in another country too, adding a global perspective to your skills.

Here’s how UEA makes sure your learning goes beyond the textbook:

  • Cutting-edge labs and research hubs – You’ll work in UEA’s specialist teaching labs and benefit from the facilities at the Norwich Research Park, home to institutes like the John Innes Centre and the Earlham Institute.

  • Your own research project – In your final year, you’ll design and carry out an independent research project in the lab, field, or through data analysis, with support from active researchers.

  • Fieldwork built into modules – Some modules take you out into real habitats to practice ecological surveys and data collection, so you learn science where it actually happens.

  • The Year Abroad experience – In your third year you’ll study at a partner university overseas, giving you fresh lab and fieldwork opportunities and the chance to explore new biological systems in a different cultural setting.

  • Access to world-class facilities – As part of the Norwich Research Park community, you’ll be connected to cutting-edge research in genomics, microbiology, plant sciences, and more.

Progression & Future Opportunities

A degree in Biological Sciences with a Year Abroad from UEA opens doors to a wide range of exciting careers. Many graduates go on to work as Biomedical Scientists, Ecological Consultants, Science Communicators, or in Pharmaceutical R&D. Thanks to the research experience you’ll gain at UEA — and the international perspective from your year abroad — you’ll stand out to employers both in the UK and overseas.

Here’s what makes your future prospects strong:

  • Careers support that really helps – UEA’s CareerCentral team offers one-to-one guidance, CV and interview workshops, support for internships, and tailored advice for international students looking to work abroad.

  • Impressive employment outcomes – Around 15 months after graduating, UEA biology graduates typically earn around £25,000, with salaries rising towards £30,000+ within a few years.

  • Industry and research connections – Being part of the Norwich Research Park links you with world-class institutes like the John Innes Centre and Earlham Institute, meaning you’re learning right at the heart of groundbreaking bioscience.

  • Long-term value of accreditation – This course is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology, a mark that tells employers you’ve been trained to a recognised professional standard.

  • Strong graduate outcomes – Almost all UEA biological sciences graduates are in work or further study within 15 months, with many moving into careers where a biology degree is essential.

Further Academic Progression:
If you decide to carry on studying, you’ll have plenty of options. Many graduates go on to a Master’s degree in areas like molecular biology, ecology, bioinformatics or environmental science. Others pursue a PhD, especially those who enjoyed their final-year research project. Your Year Abroad also gives you an international edge, which can open doors to global postgraduate opportunities.
