MSci Biomedical Sciences

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Southampton

Program Overview

The MSci Biomedical Sciences at Southampton gives you an in-depth understanding of human disease—from molecular mechanics to new therapeutic strategies—combining biochemistry, genetics, pharmacology, and neuroscience. It’s the perfect fit for students who want the depth of a professional science degree and the chance to lead two independent research projects over a four-year, integrated Master’s journey.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
You’ll dive into the basics with modules such as Fundamentals of Cell Biology and Physiology, The Chemistry of Life, The Human Genome and Disease, and How to Think Like a Scientist. These lay a solid foundation through integrated lab sessions, group discussions, and ethical practicals using biological tissues—all built to nurture experimental confidence and scientific reasoning.

Year 2
In your second year, the content deepens: you'll study Flow of Genetic Information, Immunology, Infection & Inflammation, and Principles of Pharmacology, as well as choose from areas like Bioinformatics and Medical Microbiology. These modules give you sharper lab skills, including molecular techniques, computational analysis, and experimental design.

Year 3
Here, you begin one of your independent research projects, designing your own experiment while working closely with academic mentors. Complementary advanced options — like Cancer Chromosome Biology, Neurodegenerative Diseases, Biofilms, or Science Communication — let you specialize while refining your research, critical thinking, and presentation skills.

Year 4 (MSci year)
In the final year, you dive into your second independent research project and tackle master’s-level modules that reflect your interests and career aims. This is your opportunity to innovate and lead a substantial scientific study under expert supervision—perfect for students targeting PhD pathways or advanced roles in research and industry.

Focus areas: disease mechanisms, pharmacology, immunology, genetics, neuroscience, research design

Learning outcomes: proficiency in molecular and cellular lab techniques, data analysis and bioinformatics, research independence, and scientific communication
