MSci Chemistry

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Imperial College London

Program Overview

The MSci Chemistry at Imperial College London is a four-year program that takes you from the fundamentals of chemistry right through to cutting-edge research. It’s perfect for curious, hands-on learners who love experimenting in the lab and want to pursue careers in research, industry, or even further studies like a PhD.

Curriculum structure:
Year 1 – You’ll start with the building blocks of chemistry, exploring topics like Structure and Bonding, Reactivity at Carbon Centres, and Spectroscopy. You’ll also get plenty of lab time in Practical Chemistry 1, helping you develop essential hands-on skills from day one.

Year 2 – This year is all about broadening your understanding. Modules like Analysis of Molecules, Materials and Mixtures, Macromolecules and Materials, and Solids, Liquids and Interfaces combine theory with practical experiments, giving you confidence in handling complex chemical systems.

Year 3 – Now things get exciting with advanced topics. You’ll study Advanced Chemistry Topics 1 & 2, dive deeper into Practical Chemistry 3, and have the chance to explore a subject outside your core modules through I‑Explore. You’ll also start shaping your own research project.

Year 4 – The final year is where you shine. You’ll complete a six-month Research Project, working closely with leading researchers, and choose from exciting options like Advanced Catalysis, Sustainable Chemistry, and Molecular Imaging. It’s your chance to focus on what excites you most in chemistry.

Focus areas: Inorganic, organic, physical, analytical, synthetic and computational chemistry; lab techniques; independent research; and advanced topics like catalysis, nanomaterials, sustainable chemistry, and drug discovery.

Learning outcomes: By the end, you’ll confidently design and conduct experiments, analyse complex data, use computational tools, communicate scientific ideas clearly, and carry out independent research at a professional level.

Professional alignment (accreditation): Accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), the MSci meets all requirements for professional registration as a Chartered Chemist (CChem).

Reputation (employability rankings): Imperial’s Chemistry Department is consistently ranked among the top globally (QS World Rankings: 11th for Chemistry), and 93% of graduates go on to highly-skilled roles or further study.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Imperial, learning chemistry isn’t just about lectures — it’s about getting your hands dirty in world-class labs from day one. You’ll work with cutting-edge equipment, like NMR spectrometers and laser systems, and use automation tools that are shaping modern chemistry. The program blends theory with real-world practice, giving you the skills to solve complex problems, run experiments independently, and think like a professional chemist. You’ll also have access to extensive libraries, digital resources, and research hubs where ideas turn into discoveries. Here’s how you’ll gain practical experience:

  • Hands-on lab work in state-of-the-art facilities, carrying out synthesis, analysis, and characterization experiments.

  • Use of automation tools like liquid-handling robots and flow chemistry setups to gain experience with modern lab technologies.

  • Access to the Molecular Sciences Research Hub, giving you a taste of real research environments and collaborative projects.

  • Opportunities to explore modules outside traditional chemistry, like coding, business, or other STEM subjects through the i-Explore program.

  • Full access to Imperial’s library resources, online databases, and specialist software for data analysis and molecular modeling.

  • Research-led teaching and projects that mirror real industry and academic challenges, preparing you for a career in labs, industry, or further study.
