Chemistry with External Placement (MChem)

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Southampton

Program Overview

If you love discovering how chemistry shapes the world around us and want to put your knowledge into practice, this four-year MChem is an exciting choice. You’ll study all the core areas of chemistry and then take your skills beyond the classroom with a six-month professional or research placement in the UK or overseas — a real boost for your career and confidence.

Curriculum structure

Year 1:
Your journey begins with a strong foundation in the key principles of chemistry. Modules such as Foundations of Chemistry I & II explore atomic structure, bonding, and reaction mechanisms, while Practical Chemistry I introduces essential lab techniques and safety procedures. You’ll also develop your problem-solving and analytical skills through Mathematical Skills and Analytical Methods for Chemists.

Year 2:
You’ll start connecting theory with more advanced applications. In Advanced Chemistry I and Advanced Chemistry II, you’ll explore quantum chemistry, organometallics, and reaction kinetics. Through Practical Chemistry II, you’ll refine your lab precision and data analysis skills. Optional modules like Ethics in Science, Engineering & Technology or Chemical Solutions to Environmental Issues let you broaden your understanding of chemistry’s global impact.

Year 3:
This year is about deepening your expertise and gaining independence as a researcher. Core modules such as Frontiers in Organic, Inorganic, and Physical Chemistry push you to explore modern challenges in chemical science, while Advanced Practical Skills in Chemistry gives you greater autonomy in lab work. Optional topics like Simulation Methods in Chemistry and Medicinal Chemistry III help you tailor your studies toward your interests or career goals.

Year 4:
Your final year is where everything comes together. You’ll spend six months on an external placement — either in industry or at a partner university abroad — applying your knowledge in a professional research environment. After returning, you’ll take advanced modules such as Computational Chemistry, NMR Spectroscopy, and Energy Applications of Electrochemistry, preparing you to move confidently into a research career or high-level industry role.

Focus areas: Practical and analytical chemistry, computational chemistry, sustainable and medicinal chemistry, materials and energy research, and professional laboratory experience through placement.

Learning outcomes: You’ll graduate with advanced lab and problem-solving skills, confidence in handling complex data, and the ability to design and conduct independent research — plus real-world experience that employers and postgraduate programs value highly.

Professional alignment (accreditation): Fully accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), ensuring your degree meets professional standards and counts toward becoming a Chartered Chemist (CChem).

Reputation (employability rankings): Southampton is ranked among the top 20 UK universities for graduate employability (QS 2022), and 100% of Chemistry graduates are in work or further study within 15 months of graduating (Discover Uni, 2024).

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Southampton, chemistry is something you do, not just study. From your very first lab session, you’ll be working hands-on with the same advanced equipment and techniques used by professional chemists. You’ll gain confidence in experimental design, data handling, and scientific communication, while learning in an environment that feels more like a real research facility than a classroom.

What really sets this course apart is the six-month external placement — a chance to take everything you’ve learned and apply it in a professional setting, either with a leading company or at an international research university. You’ll graduate not only with a Master’s degree but also with real industry experience and a strong sense of where your chemistry career can take you.

Here’s how you’ll experience that hands-on learning in practice:

  • World-class labs and instruments – You’ll train in Southampton’s advanced teaching and research laboratories, including the single-crystal diffraction lab, mass spectrometry suite, and the UK’s only dedicated X-ray crystallography teaching facility.

  • Cutting-edge equipment – You’ll use modern analytical tools such as NMR and IR spectrometers and X-ray diffractometers, with laptops provided during lab sessions for real-time data recording and analysis.

  • Six-month external placement – Spend half your final year in a professional chemistry environment, either in industry or at an overseas university. You’ll complete a major research or commercial project, guided by both your host supervisor and a Southampton academic.

  • Research-focused projects – In your later years, you’ll take on independent research within Southampton’s chemistry research groups — areas like sustainable materials, energy chemistry, or computational modelling.

  • Supportive learning environment – Before your placement, you’ll receive expert help with CV writing, interview prep, and professional skills workshops, supported by a dedicated placement tutor.

  • Modern, accessible facilities – The labs are designed for safety, comfort, and inclusion, with height-adjustable benches, upgraded fume hoods, and sustainable lab practices that reflect real industry standards.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduating from this MChem opens doors to an incredible range of opportunities. With both advanced chemistry knowledge and real-world experience from your external placement, you’ll be ready for roles that value analytical thinking, creativity, and hands-on technical skills. Many of our graduates go on to become Research Scientists, Analytical Chemists, Pharmaceutical Specialists, or Materials Development Engineers, using the skills they’ve honed in our labs and on placement to make a real impact.

Here’s how the University of Southampton helps you get there:

  • Personalised career support – The Careers and Employability Service offers one-to-one guidance, mock interviews, and specialist workshops to help you secure your placement and prepare for graduate roles. They’ll also stay in touch throughout your external placement to support your career goals.

  • Outstanding graduate outcomes – Around 95% of Southampton Chemistry graduates are employed or pursuing further study within 15 months of finishing their degree (Discover Uni, 2024).

  • Strong salary growth – Southampton Chemistry graduates earn a median salary of £26,500 one year after graduation, rising to around £35,800 within five years (The Uni Guide, 2024).

  • Industry and research connections – You’ll benefit from the department’s partnerships with top global companies and research universities, where many students complete their six-month placement projects.

  • Professional recognition – The degree is fully accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), putting you on the path toward professional membership (MRSC) and eventually Chartered Chemist (CChem) status — a valuable mark of credibility in the field.

  • Career-ready experience – By the time you graduate, you’ll have completed a substantial professional or research project, developed strong problem-solving and communication skills, and built a network of contacts in both academia and industry.

Further Academic Progression:

If you’re inspired to continue your studies, this degree gives you a direct route into PhD or research programmes in chemistry, materials science, nanotechnology, or sustainable energy. Many Southampton graduates continue their research at top universities worldwide or move into interdisciplinary roles that bridge chemistry with data science or environmental innovation.
