BSc Physics

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Keele University

Program Overview

Keele’s BSc (Hons) Physics is a three-year program designed for curious minds who want to understand the universe — from quantum mechanics to cosmology — while gaining practical skills that employers value.

It’s ideal for students who enjoy problem-solving, hands-on experimentation, and applying physics to real-world challenges across science, technology, and industry.

Curriculum structure

Year 1: Building the Foundations of Physics
You’ll explore the fundamentals of gravitation, relativity and matter, electricity and magnetism, and waves, while developing essential skills in Python programming, scientific writing, and mathematical methods. Laboratory work and problem-solving sessions help you apply theory to practice from the start.

Year 2: Expanding into Quantum and Applied Physics
This year deepens your understanding with modules in optics, quantum mechanics, and nuclear physics. You’ll also take part in team investigations and individual experiments, and explore emerging technologies through a specialist module in applied physics, which connects physics to breakthrough scientific areas and industries.

Year 3: Research and Real-World Application
You’ll undertake a substantial independent research project aligned with your interests — experimental, computational, or theoretical — and present your findings to an audience that could include potential employers. Advanced modules in electromagnetism, solid-state physics, and quantum mechanics round out your expertise, while a group report challenges you to solve a real-world issue for policy-makers.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Keele’s BSc (Hons) Physics program offers students a hands-on, research-informed learning experience, with access to specialist labs, digital tools, and real-world projects that build both technical and transferable skills.

From day one, you’ll be working with experimental equipment, coding in Python, and engaging in collaborative investigations — all while learning in a supportive, research-active environment. Here’s how experiential learning is embedded into the course:

  • Keele’s Central Science Laboratories provide state-of-the-art facilities for experimental physics, including optics, electromagnetism, and nuclear physics.
  • Python programming is taught in Year 1, supporting data analysis, modelling, and computational physics.
  • Team Investigations and Individual Experiments in Year 2 develop collaborative problem-solving and experimental design skills.
  • Final Year Research Project allows students to pursue an independent investigation — experimental, theoretical, or computational — under academic supervision.
  • Group Report module challenges students to apply physics to real-world policy or societal issues, simulating consultancy-style teamwork.
  • Keele Observatory offers opportunities for hands-on experience in astronomical observation and data collection.
  • Access to Keele’s Smart Innovation Hub and Science and Innovation Park, fostering links with local industry and research centres.
  • Keele Library and online resources support research with access to physics journals, databases, and scientific literature.
  • Keele Careers and Employability Team provides tailored support, including internships, placements, and employer networking through the Keele Internship Programme.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Keele’s BSc Physics graduates are equipped with the analytical, computational, and experimental skills to thrive in science, technology, and industry — with career paths ranging from research and engineering to data science and education.

Typical job roles include research physicist, software developer, data analyst, and technical consultant. With a curriculum designed around real-world challenges and employer needs, Keele helps students transition confidently into the workplace:

  • Keele Careers and Employability Team offers tailored support through the Keele Internship Programme, employer networking events, and career workshops.
  • Group Report module simulates consultancy-style teamwork, preparing students to present physics-based solutions to policy-makers and industry clients.
  • Keele Observatory and Smart Innovation Hub provide hands-on experience and industry engagement opportunities.
  • Institute of Physics (IoP) accreditation partially fulfills requirements for Chartered Physicist (CPhys) status — a valuable long-term credential.
  • Graduates leave with a toolkit of professional, practical, and employability skills, embedded throughout the curriculum and aligned with sector demands.

Further Academic Progression:
Students can continue into MSc or PhD programs in Physics, Astrophysics, or Applied Mathematics, either at Keele or other leading institutions. Keele’s active research groups and postgraduate opportunities support further academic development.
