MSci Hons Theoretical Physics with Mathematics Study Abroad

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Lancaster University

Program Overview

Lancaster’s MSci Theoretical Physics with Mathematics (Study Abroad) is a four-year integrated Master’s program that combines advanced physics with rigorous mathematics, enriched by an international study experience. It suits students who enjoy abstract reasoning and want to explore the deepest theories of the universe while mastering the mathematical tools that underpin them.

Curriculum Structure

Year One

You’ll begin by building a strong foundation in both physics and mathematics. Core modules include Experimental Physics, Fields, Matter and Quantum Physics, and Mathematical Skills 1 & 2, alongside Physics Skills, which develops programming, data analysis, and scientific communication. Laboratory sessions ensure you gain practical experience while strengthening your theoretical base.

Year Two

This year deepens your theoretical and mathematical training with modules such as The Physical Universe, Relativity, Nuclear and Particle Physics, and Properties of Matter. Extended laboratory sessions introduce advanced experiments like two-slit single photon diffraction and Zeeman effect studies, while mathematics modules sharpen your ability to model complex systems.

Year Three (Study Abroad Year)

You’ll spend this year at one of Lancaster’s international partner universities, continuing your physics and mathematics studies in a new academic and cultural environment. This experience broadens your perspective, exposes you to different teaching styles, and enhances your adaptability—qualities highly valued in global scientific careers.

Year Four

Your final year focuses on Master’s-level modules such as Quantum Field Theory, Advanced Quantum Mechanics, and Relativity and Cosmology, combined with advanced mathematics. You’ll also complete a year-long individual research project, supervised by Lancaster’s active research staff, giving you direct experience of professional theoretical physics and mathematics research.

Focus Areas

Quantum mechanics, relativity, cosmology, particle physics, condensed matter, quantum field theory, mathematical modelling, advanced mathematics, international study experience.

Learning Outcomes

Advanced mathematical and analytical skills; ability to model and solve complex theoretical problems; proficiency in programming and data analysis; strong communication and teamwork skills; global outlook through international study; readiness for research or industry roles.
