Lancaster’s MPhys Physics with Astrophysics is a four-year integrated Master’s program that blends core physics with the study of stars, galaxies, and the wider universe. You’ll begin with a strong foundation in physics and mathematics. Core modules include Experimental Physics, Fields, Matter and Quantum Physics, and Mathematical Skills 1 & 2, alongside Physics Skills, which develops programming, data analysis, and scientific communication. Laboratory sessions ensure you gain practical experience while strengthening your theoretical base.

Year Two

This year expands your astrophysics knowledge with modules such as The Physical Universe, Relativity, Nuclear and Particle Physics, and Properties of Matter. Extended laboratory sessions introduce advanced experiments like two-slit single photon diffraction and Zeeman effect studies, while astrophysics modules begin to explore stellar structure and galactic dynamics.

Year Three

You’ll move into advanced astrophysics topics, including Astrophysics Laboratory, Cosmology, and Stellar Structure and Evolution, alongside higher-level physics modules such as Quantum Mechanics and Condensed Matter Physics. You’ll also undertake group projects or industry-linked challenges, applying astrophysical and physical models to real-world problems and presenting your work at Lancaster’s annual Physics student conference.

Year Four

Your final year focuses on Master’s-level modules such as Relativity and Cosmology, Astrophysics Research Project, and Advanced Quantum Mechanics. You’ll complete a year-long individual research project, supervised by Lancaster’s active research staff, giving you direct experience of professional astrophysics research and observational techniques.
