Royal Holloway’s Astrophysics MSci is a four-year integrated Master’s degree for students who want to explore the universe through cutting-edge physics and astronomy. You’ll study everything from quantum mechanics and general relativity to stellar evolution and cosmology, preparing for advanced research or high-impact careers in science and technology.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1:
You’ll build a strong foundation in Classical Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism, and Mathematics for Scientists, while developing lab skills and learning to use software like Mathematica. Modules such as Scientific Skills and Introduction to Astrophysics introduce you to experimental techniques and the physics of the universe.
Year 2:
This year deepens your understanding with Thermal Physics, Quantum Mechanics, and Mathematical Methods. You’ll explore the structure of matter, wave-particle duality, and the Schrödinger equation, while continuing lab work and computational problem-solving.
Year 3:
You’ll tackle advanced topics like General Relativity & Cosmology, Stellar Astrophysics, and Planetary Geology & Geophysics. A group mini-project introduces you to departmental research, and modules in Advanced Quantum Theory and Electromagnetism prepare you for independent study.
Year 4 (MSci Year):
You’ll complete a major individual research project closely linked to the department’s active research areas, such as gravitational-wave astronomy or dark matter. Specialist modules include Particle Astrophysics, Advanced Topics in Cosmology, and Research Topics in Astrophysics, often taught in collaboration with King’s College London.
Focus Areas
Stellar astrophysics, cosmology, quantum mechanics, general relativity, planetary science, particle astrophysics, observational astronomy.
Learning Outcomes
Advanced theoretical and computational physics, data analysis, scientific research skills, mathematical modelling, experimental design, academic writing and presentation.
Professional Alignment (Accreditation)
Accredited by the Institute of Physics, supporting progression to chartered physicist status and careers in academia, industry, or research.
Reputation (Employability Rankings)
