MSci Physics with Particle Physics

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Royal Holloway University of London

Program Overview

Royal Holloway’s MSci Physics with Particle Physics is your launchpad to the frontiers of science — blending core physics with deep expertise in the subatomic world.

This four-year integrated master’s degree is perfect for students who want to explore the universe at its most fundamental level, from quantum mechanics to the Higgs boson. You’ll study advanced particle physics, gain hands-on lab experience, and complete a major research project — with a field trip to CERN included.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1: Core Foundations in Physics and Mathematics
You’ll begin with Mathematics for Scientists 1 & 2, mastering calculus, vector algebra, and probability distributions. Modules like Classical Mechanics and Electricity and Magnetism introduce the principles of motion, forces, and fields. In Scientific Skills, you’ll gain hands-on lab experience, learning to record, analyze, and present experimental data.

Year 2: Quantum Mechanics and Computational Physics
This year deepens your understanding of Quantum Physics, Thermal Physics, and Mathematical Methods. You’ll explore wave-particle duality and Schrödinger’s equation, while Computational Physics teaches Python programming for data analysis and simulation. Lab modules consolidate your practical skills, and you’ll begin to specialize in particle physics.

Year 3: Particle Physics and Research Preparation
You’ll study Particle Physics, Cosmology, and Advanced Quantum Theory, exploring quarks, leptons, Higgs bosons, and the early universe. A field trip to CERN brings theory to life. You’ll also complete a mini-research project and group work, building your presentation and scientific writing skills.

Year 4: Advanced Study and Individual Research Project
Your final year includes a major individual research project — experimental, theoretical, or computational — embedded within a research group. You’ll choose from specialist modules across the University of London, such as Quantum Computation, General Relativity, or Accelerator Physics, gaining depth in your chosen area and working closely with expert supervisors.
