MSci Chemical Physics with Industrial Experience

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Bristol

Program Overview

This four-year MSci is designed for students who want to combine rigorous scientific training with real-world experience in industry. You’ll study the intersection of chemistry and physics while spending a full year working as a paid employee in a scientific company — gaining both academic depth and professional insight.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
You’ll build a strong foundation in chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Core units include Chemical Principles I, Introduction to Programming for Chemists, and Mathematics for Chemists and Physicists, giving you the analytical and computational skills needed to understand atomic and molecular systems.

Year 2
This year deepens your understanding of quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, and spectroscopy. You’ll study units such as Quantum Chemistry, Thermodynamics and Kinetics, and Electromagnetism and Optics, while continuing to develop lab and coding skills relevant to chemical physics.

Year 3
You’ll spend 12 months on an industrial placement, working as a paid employee in a company. This is a chance to apply your knowledge in a professional setting, gain technical experience, and build industry contacts — all while contributing to real scientific projects.

Year 4
Back on campus, you’ll take advanced units such as Statistical Mechanics and Molecular Spectroscopy, and complete a major research project. This final year consolidates your academic and industrial experience, preparing you for high-level roles in science and technology.

Focus Areas

Chemical Physics, Quantum Chemistry, Spectroscopy, Thermodynamics, Programming, Industrial Research

Learning Outcomes

Graduates will master the theoretical and practical foundations of chemical physics, develop computational and laboratory skills, and gain direct experience applying science in industrial contexts.

Professional Alignment

Accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), supporting your pathway to Chartered Chemist (CChem) status.

Reputation

Bristol is ranked #1 in the UK for Chemistry research and top five for Physics research (THE analysis of REF 2021), with a strong reputation for teaching and industry engagement.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This course is designed to immerse you in both academic and real-world scientific environments. From day one, you’ll gain hands-on experience in modern laboratories, develop programming and data analysis skills, and apply your knowledge during a full year working in industry. The program is structured to ensure you graduate with not only a deep understanding of chemical physics, but also the practical and professional skills that employers value.

Here’s how Bristol supports your learning through real-world experience and cutting-edge facilities:

  • Industrial Placement Year: A full 12-month paid placement in a scientific company during your third year, where you’ll work as a contributing team member on real research or development projects.
  • State-of-the-Art Teaching Labs: Access to Bristol’s refurbished undergraduate chemistry laboratories, equipped for advanced spectroscopy, kinetics, and materials analysis.
  • Computational Tools: Training in scientific programming and data analysis using industry-relevant software, including Python and other tools used in quantum chemistry and molecular modelling.
  • Research Project (Final Year): A substantial individual project supervised by academic staff, often linked to active research groups in chemical physics.
  • School of Chemistry Facilities: Includes the Centre for Nanoscience and Quantum Information (NSQI) and the Bristol Centre for Functional Nanomaterials, offering exposure to interdisciplinary research environments.
  • University Library and Study Spaces: Extensive access to scientific journals, databases, and collaborative learning environments tailored to STEM students.
  • Careers and Employability Support: Dedicated placement team and careers advisors help you secure and prepare for your industrial year, with support continuing through to graduation.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates from this program are equipped with a rare combination of theoretical knowledge, laboratory expertise, and real-world industrial experience. This makes them highly competitive for roles in scientific research, technology development, and data-driven industries. Common career paths include analytical scientist, research chemist, software developer in scientific computing, and materials scientist.

Here’s how Bristol supports your career journey:

  • Careers Service: Offers tailored support including CV reviews, employer networking events, and guidance for securing your industrial placement. Chemistry students also benefit from subject-specific career panels and mentoring schemes.
  • Industrial Placement Year: A full 12-month paid placement in a scientific company gives you direct experience and professional contacts before graduation.
  • Graduate Outcomes: Bristol is ranked #1 in the UK for Chemistry research and top five for Physics research (THE analysis of REF 2021), with strong graduate employment across science and technology sectors.
  • Industry Connections: The School of Chemistry collaborates with companies such as AstraZeneca, Johnson Matthey, and the UK Met Office, offering placement opportunities and guest lectures.
  • Accreditation Value: Accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), supporting your pathway to Chartered Chemist (CChem) status — a long-term professional credential.

Further Academic Progression:
This MSci is an integrated master's degree, but it also sets you up for doctoral study. Many graduates continue into PhD programs in chemical physics, quantum chemistry, or interdisciplinary research areas like nanomaterials and computational modelling — often at Bristol or other leading institutions.
