You’ll study quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, machine learning, and deep learning — all while gaining hands-on experience in a real-world workplace.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
You’ll build a strong foundation in classical mechanics, thermodynamics, quantum physics, and optics. Core modules include Mechanics, Relativity and Astrophysics, Thermodynamics, Electronics, Solid State and Introduction to Quantum Physics, and Vibrations, Waves and Optics. You’ll also begin coding in Python through Coding and Experimental Physics, and explore AI fundamentals in Applications of Artificial Intelligence, with optional modules like Introduction to Python for Machine Learning.

Year 2
This year deepens your understanding of quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, and condensed matter physics. You’ll study Quantum Mechanics, Statistical Mechanics and Computation, Electromagnetism, and Condensed Matter Physics. AI integration continues with Machine Learning Fundamentals with Applications in Science and Engineering, and you’ll enhance your lab and coding skills in Experimental Skills for Physics with Artificial Intelligence.

Year 3 (Industrial Placement Year)
You’ll spend 9–12 months working full-time in a physics or AI-related role within industry. This placement gives you the chance to apply your academic knowledge in a professional environment, develop workplace skills, and build a strong CV. You’ll also complete reflective assessments and maintain academic engagement with Leeds throughout the year.

Year 4
Your final year centres on a major research project (Integrated Masters Research Project) where you’ll apply AI to real physics challenges — from quantum simulations to astrophysical data analysis. You’ll also study Advanced Topics of AI, with optional modules like Quantum Information Science and Technology, General Relativity, and Superconductivity.
