Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

You won’t just study physics at Leeds — you’ll live it. The Theoretical Physics MPhys, BSc program immerses you in cutting-edge research, advanced coding, and real-world problem-solving from day one.

Experiential Learning

At Leeds, theoretical physics isn’t confined to textbooks — it’s brought to life through hands-on experimentation, advanced computing, and collaborative research. From your first year, you’ll gain practical experience in state-of-the-art labs housed in the Sir William Henry Bragg Building, using industry-relevant tools and software like Python to simulate, model, and analyse physical systems. As you progress, you’ll work alongside active researchers, contribute to real projects, and even have the chance to publish your findings.

Here’s how you’ll apply your learning in real-world contexts:

  • Dedicated experimental labs and teaching spaces in the Sir William Henry Bragg Building, designed for physics students to explore electronics, optics, and quantum systems.
  • Coding and Experimental Physics module in Year 1 introduces Python programming and lab-based experimentation, building your computational and analytical skills from the ground up.
  • Group Innovation Project in Sustainability (optional in Year 4) lets you collaborate on a business plan tackling UN Sustainable Development Goals using scientific research.
  • Summer research internships offer paid opportunities to work on live research projects, developing your lab, coding, and presentation skills.
  • Final-year research project places you in an active research group, where you’ll contribute to cutting-edge work in areas like quantum field theory, astrophysics, or soft matter physics.
  • Access to extensive computing facilities, including 24/7 computer clusters equipped with scientific software and data analysis tools.
  • Optional year in industry or study abroad, giving you the chance to apply your physics knowledge in a professional or international setting.
  • Peer-assisted learning and personal tutoring, ensuring you’re supported both academically and personally throughout your degree.
