MPhys Physics with Industrial Placement

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Southampton

Program Overview

Southampton’s MPhys Physics with Industrial Placement is a four-year degree designed for students who want to combine advanced physics training with real-world experience in industry. It’s perfect for those aiming to apply their knowledge in sectors like aerospace, defence, energy, or data science — with a full year spent working in a professional research or technical environment.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
You’ll start with the fundamentals of physics and mathematics, studying modules like Classical Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism, and Mathematics for Physicists. You’ll also explore Relativity and Quantum Physics and gain hands-on experience in Physics Laboratory I.

Year 2
This year builds on your foundation with deeper study in Quantum Physics, Thermodynamics and Statistical Physics, and Waves and Optics. You’ll continue developing experimental skills in Physics Laboratory II and explore Atomic Physics and Nuclear Physics.

Year 3
You’ll specialise in advanced topics such as Quantum Mechanics III, Electromagnetism III, and Nuclear and Particle Physics. You’ll also begin your Research Skills training and choose optional modules like Condensed Matter Physics or Astrophysics, depending on your interests.

Year 4 (Industrial Placement Year)
You’ll spend this year working full-time in a physics-related role within industry or a research organisation. Past placements have included Airbus, UK Space Agency, QinetiQ, and Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. You’ll apply your academic knowledge to real-world challenges, gain professional experience, and complete an assessed placement project.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Southampton’s MPhys Physics with Industrial Placement gives you the best of both worlds — rigorous academic training and a full year of real-world experience in a physics-related industry. You’ll develop advanced theoretical and experimental skills while applying them directly in sectors like aerospace, defence, energy, or data science.

Here’s how experiential learning is built into the program:

  • Full-year industrial placement in your fourth year, with past students working at organisations like Airbus, UK Space Agency, QinetiQ, and Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.
  • Physics Laboratory I & II, where you’ll build core experimental skills in mechanics, electromagnetism, optics, and quantum physics.
  • Research Skills module in Year 3, preparing you for technical communication, project planning, and professional collaboration.
  • Access to Southampton’s advanced lab facilities, including laser labs, nanofabrication cleanrooms, and high-performance computing clusters.
  • Use of scientific software and data analysis tools in modules like Quantum Mechanics III and Electromagnetism III.
  • STAG research centre (Southampton Theory, Astronomy and Gravitation), offering exposure to cutting-edge theoretical and applied physics.
  • Hartley Library and Highfield Campus study spaces, with access to specialist physics journals, databases, and collaborative learning environments.

This is a degree that doesn’t just prepare you for the future — it puts you in it.
