Southampton’s MPhys Physics with Quantum Science and Technologies is a future-focused degree for students who want to explore the quantum world and help shape the next generation of technologies. It’s ideal for those excited by quantum mechanics, computing, and photonics — blending theoretical depth with hands-on research in cutting-edge labs.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1
You’ll build a strong foundation in physics and mathematics through modules like Classical Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism, and Mathematics for Physicists. You’ll also explore Relativity and Quantum Physics and begin developing practical skills in Physics Laboratory I.
Year 2
This year deepens your understanding of Quantum Physics, Thermodynamics and Statistical Physics, and Waves and Optics. You’ll continue your lab training in Physics Laboratory II and explore Atomic Physics and Nuclear Physics, laying the groundwork for quantum specialisation.
Year 3
You’ll specialise in advanced topics such as Quantum Mechanics III, Electromagnetism III, and Nuclear and Particle Physics. You’ll also take Quantum Science and Technologies I, which introduces quantum information, quantum optics, and quantum materials, and begin your Research Skills training.
Year 4
The final year focuses on advanced quantum topics and research. You’ll complete a substantial Master’s Research Project and study Quantum Science and Technologies II, which covers quantum computing, quantum communication, and quantum metrology. Optional modules like Quantum Field Theory or General Relativity allow further specialisation.
Focus areas
Quantum mechanics, quantum computing, quantum optics, quantum communication, quantum materials, particle physics, photonics.
