University of the West of Scotland

Program Overview

The BSc (Hons) Physics at UWS develops your understanding of physics as a core science, combining theory with hands-on laboratory skills. It suits students who are curious about how the universe works and want to apply physics in industries ranging from energy and telecommunications to research and teaching.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
You’ll build a strong foundation in physics, mathematics, and computational methods. Modules cover atomic physics and thermodynamics, taught at the level of Scottish Advanced Highers, ensuring you gain confidence in both theory and practical skills.

Year 2
Your studies expand into classical mechanics, optics, electronics, and properties of matter, alongside modern physics. You’ll also strengthen your mathematical methods for physicists and develop professional skills through practical labs and workshops.

Year 3
Core modules include electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, and atoms, nuclei & particles, supported by advanced mathematical methods. You can choose options such as imaging & nuclear medicine, detectors & nuclear lab skills, or advanced optics, tailoring your degree to your interests.

Optional Placement Year
Students can undertake a 12-month paid industrial placement with employers such as CERN or Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, gaining invaluable real-world experience.

Year 4
You’ll study advanced topics including statistical physics, solid state physics, optical system design, and applications of nuclear physics. A major highlight is your research dissertation, where you apply your knowledge to an extended project in theoretical or experimental physics.
