BSc Hons in Physics with a Foundation Year

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of York

Program Overview

York’s BSc Physics with Foundation Year is designed for students who show strong potential but need an extra year to build the academic skills and subject knowledge required for a physics degree. It’s ideal if you’re returning to study, changing disciplines, or didn’t meet the standard entry requirements but are passionate about physics and ready to succeed.

Curriculum structure

Foundation Year
You’ll study Mathematics, Physics, and Academic Skills tailored to university-level learning. Modules include Mechanics and Materials, Waves and Electricity, and Mathematics for Scientists, alongside Study Skills for Science and Science Project. This year builds your confidence in problem-solving, lab work, and scientific communication.

Year One
You’ll join the standard BSc Physics cohort and study Classical Mechanics and Laboratories, Classical and Quantum Waves, Electromagnetism and Relativity, and Mathematical, Computational and Professional Skills 1 & 2. You’ll also choose an option such as Mapping the Universe and Laboratories or Theoretical Skills and Laboratories.

Year Two
You’ll deepen your understanding of physical laws and experimental techniques through modules like Advanced Mechanics, Physics Laboratories and Skills, and a range of electives. You’ll continue developing your research, coding, and analytical skills.

Year Three
You’ll choose four advanced option modules such as Advanced Theoretical Techniques and Modelling Matter, and complete a BSc Project—a team-based investigation supervised by faculty. You’ll present your findings through a talk and academic poster at a student conference.

Focus areas

Mechanics, quantum physics, electromagnetism, computational modelling, nuclear physics, nanomaterials, fusion plasmas.

Learning outcomes

Scientific investigation, experimental design, data analysis, teamwork, Python programming, academic communication.

Professional alignment (accreditation)

Accredited by the Institute of Physics, supporting progression to Chartered Physicist status.

Reputation (employability rankings)

York ranks 2nd in the Russell Group for Learning Resources in Physics (NSS 2024) and 5th in the UK for departmental research environment (REF 2021, Times Higher Education).

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This program is designed to help you build practical confidence from the ground up. In the Foundation Year, you’ll gain hands-on experience in physics and mathematics through structured lab work, digital modelling, and a science project. As you progress into the full BSc Physics degree, you’ll work with advanced equipment, computational tools, and collaborative research projects that mirror real-world scientific practice.

Here’s what that looks like in practice:

  • Foundation Year modules include Mechanics and Materials, Waves and Electricity, and Mathematics for Scientists, supported by lab sessions and a Science Project.
  • Study Skills for Science helps you develop academic writing, research techniques, and presentation skills.
  • Mathematical, Computational and Professional Skills modules teach Python and digital modelling tools used in physics research.
  • Physics Laboratories and Skills modules in Years One and Two develop experimental techniques using York’s dedicated teaching labs.
  • BSc Project in Year Three involves team-based research supervised by faculty, culminating in a talk and academic poster at a student conference.
  • Access to York’s Library and Archives, with scientific journals, datasets, and technical resources.
  • Departmental research centres, including the York Plasma Institute and Centre for Quantum Technologies, which engage undergraduates in active research.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates from this pathway go on to thrive in roles that demand analytical thinking, technical precision, and scientific curiosity. You’ll be well-prepared for careers such as data analyst, software developer, research assistant, or medical physics technician across sectors like healthcare, energy, finance, and technology.

Here’s how York supports your career journey:

  • Careers and Placements team offers tailored support including mock interviews, employer events, and access to internships through the York Internships Programme.
  • 91% of York physics graduates are in work or further study within 15 months (Graduate Outcomes 2020/21).
  • Industry partnerships include the York Plasma Institute, Centre for Quantum Technologies, and collaborations with national labs and private sector R&D.
  • Accredited by the Institute of Physics, supporting progression to Chartered Physicist status.
  • Strong graduate outcomes, with alumni working at organisations like Rolls-Royce, IBM, NHS, and in global research centres.

Further Academic Progression:
After completing the BSc, many students continue to MSc or PhD programs in physics, quantum technologies, medical physics, or computational modelling—either at York or other leading institutions worldwide.
