Program Overview

York’s MPhys Physics with Astrophysics (with a Year in Industry) is perfect for students who want to explore the universe while gaining real-world experience in industry. You’ll study the foundations of physics and astrophysics, then spend a paid year in industry applying your skills before returning to complete advanced research training.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
Your first year consolidates core physics knowledge and builds practical skills. You’ll study Classical Mechanics and Laboratories, Electromagnetism and Relativity, and Classical and Quantum Waves, alongside Mathematical, Computational and Professional Skills. The Mapping the Universe and Laboratories module introduces observational astronomy, while the Academic Integrity module ensures you develop strong independent study habits.

Year 2
In the second year, you’ll deepen your understanding of physical laws and processes. Modules include Thermodynamics and Electromagnetism, Astrophysical Technologies and Space Science, and Quantum, Atomic, Nuclear and Particle Physics. You’ll also complete Astrophysical Laboratories and Skills, gaining hands-on experience with advanced experiments and observational techniques.

Year 3
Year three introduces advanced astrophysics and offers flexibility through option modules. Core study includes Stars and Galaxies and the Advanced Astrophysical Laboratory. You’ll choose from options such as Relativity and Cosmology, Plasma Physics and Fusion, Astrobiology, or Medical Physics, tailoring your degree to your interests while preparing for your final-year research project.

Year 4 (Industry Placement)
You’ll spend a paid year in industry, applying your physics knowledge in professional settings. Recent placements have been with organisations such as Airbus, BAE Systems, Dyson, Jaguar Land Rover, and the Science and Technology Facilities Council. Supported by York’s dedicated placement team and the White Rose Industrial Physics Academy, you’ll gain invaluable experience and industry connections.

Year 5
Your final year focuses on research. The MPhys Research Project and Skills module allows you to conduct original investigations in areas such as radio astronomy, infrared spectroscopy, or stellar pulsations. You’ll also select advanced options like Scientific Supercomputing, Cosmic Horizons, or Advanced Plasma Physics for Fusion and Applications, further specialising in your chosen field.
