Program Overview

Economics is key to understanding some of the critical questions facing our world. This course explores these questions and examines the principles and theories that provide answers.

Led by a team of highly skilled academics, students develop a thorough understanding of modern Economics. With data analysis at its core, the course enables students to evaluate economic ideas and policies and assess their broader impact.

Employability is central to the course, equipping students with transferable skills, including proficiency in digital software and applications, as well as core competencies in writing, presenting, and teamwork. The course integrates hands-on experience in a state-of-the-art Trading Floor, one of the largest of its kind. Students gain access to industry-standard software, including Bloomberg and Eikon, to develop key practical skills for careers in Economics.

Course Structure

The course follows a block teaching model, where students focus on one subject at a time. This structured approach enhances engagement, allows regular feedback, and supports study-life balance.

Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops, lab sessions, online activities, group work, and self-directed study. Assessment is through coursework (presentations, essays, and reports), exams, and tests.

Year 1: Foundation in Economic Principles

  • Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Maths & Statistics, Data Management

Year 2: Advanced Economic Analysis

  • Microeconomics & Game Theory, Econometrics, Financial Markets, Macroeconomics

Year 3: Specialization and Research (Choose one per block + dissertation)

  • Block 1: Advanced Micro OR Macroeconomics
  • Block 2: Industrial OR Behavioural Economics
  • Block 3: Digital Economics & AI OR Global Trade & Development
  • Block 4: Dissertation – Research using econometrics, modeling, or simulations.

Contact Hours

  • Full-time course requiring approximately 38 hours of study per week.
  • Up to 10 contact hours of teaching per week.
  • Weekly two-hour consultation sessions per module.
  • Timetabled meetings with personal tutors and career advisors.
  • Online resources, virtual classroom discussions, and self-study for approximately 28 hours per week.

 

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Optional Placement Year: Students have the opportunity to undertake a paid placement year between their second and final year. This placement provides invaluable professional experience, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings. The university's award-winning Careers Team assists students in securing placements, offering support through mock interviews, aptitude tests, and personalized guidance. Past students have secured placements with esteemed organizations such as KPMG, TSB Head Office, PwC, and the Government Economic Service.

DMU Global Program: The DMU Global initiative offers students a range of international experiences, including study abroad opportunities, internships, and faculty-led field trips. Economics students have previously visited the financial district of New York, gaining insights into global financial institutions and participating in exclusive tours, such as at Bloomberg headquarters.

State-of-the-Art Trading Floor: DMU boasts a modern Trading Floor, one of the largest of its kind, equipped with industry-standard software like Bloomberg and Eikon. This facility allows students to gain hands-on experience with tools used by finance professionals worldwide, enhancing their practical skills and readiness for careers in economics and finance. ​
