Program Overview

The Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Economics at King’s College London offers a comprehensive education in economic theory and practical applications, equipping students with analytical, critical thinking, and technical skills in economics, statistics, mathematics, and econometrics. Delivered by the Department of Political Economy and the Economics group at King’s Business School, the program prepares students to address real-world economic, political, and policy challenges. The course is primarily taught at the centrally located Strand and Waterloo campuses in London, providing easy access to extensive university resources and proximity to key economic and political institutions.

Year 1: Introduction to Economics (aligned with the CORE project, emphasizing real-world applications), Mathematics, and Statistics.

Year 2: Intermediate Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and Econometrics.

Year 3: Advanced modules and electives in areas such as Development Economics, Public Policy, and Financial Economics.​

 

Learning Methods and Assessment

Teaching methods include a mix of lectures, small-group discussions, and innovative digital learning tools. Assessment is diverse and includes essays, exams, oral presentations, and problem sets, with a progressive emphasis on coursework in later years. The proportion of lectures to seminars is approximately: Year 1 (16% lectures, 84% seminars), Year 2 (15% lectures, 85% seminars), and Year 3 (12% lectures, 88% seminars).

The Economics program is ranked 7th in the UK according to the Times Higher Education University World Rankings 2024 by subject.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Study Abroad (Semester Exchange)

  • Timing: Semester 2 of Year 2
  • Requirements: Students must complete Intermediate Macroeconomics and Econometrics during this period. If equivalent modules aren't available at the host institution, students must complete their second year at King's.
  • Partner Institutions: Includes McGill University (Canada), Università Bocconi (Italy), Waseda University (Japan), University of Vienna (Austria), Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Spain), University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (USA), among others.

Year in Industry (Optional)

  •  While the standard BSc Economics program is three years, students interested in a year in industry should consult with the program coordinators to explore possibilities, as this option is more commonly structured within other programs.
  • Support: King’s Global Placements Team offers guidance, but securing a placement is the student’s responsibility

Undergraduate Summer School

  • Focus: Offers modules in Business, Law, Arts & Humanities, Social Sciences & Public Policy, Life Sciences & Medicine, and Psychology & Neuroscience.
  • Structure: Emphasises experiential, research-based teaching through workshops, seminars, and lectures.​
