Lancaster University

Program Overview

TheBSc Economics (Study Abroad) at Lancaster University is built for students who are comfortable with mathematics and eager to explore how economies operate, change and influence our world. You’ll develop strong quantitative and analytical skills while having the flexibility to tailor your degree around themes like environmental economics, behavioural economics and global policy.

Curriculum structure

  • Year 1: You begin with foundational modules in economic theory, mathematics and statistics, such as Mathematical & Statistical Methods for Economics and Principles of Economics. These units give you the toolkit to interpret data, analyse decision-making by individuals and institutions, and understand how economic models are constructed.

  • Year 2: In your second year you’ll move into more advanced modules including Microeconomics II, Macroeconomics II, Econometrics and may choose options like Behavioural Economics or Environmental Economics. You’ll apply your mathematical knowledge to real-world data and begin to specialise according to your interests.

  • Year 3: The study abroad year provides students with an exceptional opportunity to broaden their academic and professional horizons. By immersing themselves in a different cultural and educational environment at one of the many partner universities worldwide, they can study complementary modules and experience diverse international academic practices

  • Year 4: The final year is your opportunity to focus on your chosen pathways. You might select modules such as Global Macroeconomic Policy, Game Theory & Strategic Behaviour, or Advanced Econometrics & Data Science. You’ll complete a major independent project or dissertation, which demonstrates your readiness for professional roles or postgraduate study.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Lancaster University’s BSc Economics (Study Abroad) programme, you’ll build strong practical experience from day one—whether through real-data econometric analysis, optional industry placements or study abroad opportunities. The course is designed so that by the time you graduate, you’ve not just studied theory but applied it in meaningful ways that enhance your employability:

  • Opportunity to spend a year on industry placement or study abroad between Years 2 and 3, gaining hands-on professional experience and a global outlook.

  • Embedded specialist careers education and coaching throughout the course—guest employer sessions, CV and interview workshops, and alumni networking tailored for economists.

  • Coursework and modules such as Foundations of Econometrics include segments in specialised econometrics software and employer-linked experiential projects, where you work on real datasets and policy issues.

  • Access to Lancaster’s high-quality resources: modern computing labs, specialist statistical software, library-based large datasets, and the Management School’s “Learning Hub” for group work and independent study.
