Economics, Politics and International Relations BA Hons

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Lancaster University

Program Overview

If you’re fascinated by how economies work, how governments make decisions, and how global issues affect our daily lives, the BA Economics, Politics & International Relations at Lancaster is designed for you. It blends three powerful subjects into one degree, giving you the knowledge and skills to understand the forces shaping our world today.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
Your first year is all about building a strong foundation. You’ll study Foundations of Macroeconomics and Foundations of Microeconomics to understand how economies function on both a national and individual level. Modules like Global Challenges in World Politics and Political Theory in a Troubled World introduce you to the big questions around power, conflict and international change. You’ll also sharpen your analytical skills with Quantitative Methods for Economics, and gain practical career skills through Professional Development for Economics.

Year 2
In your second year, you’ll dive deeper into economic and political systems. Modules such as Intermediate Microeconomics and Intermediate Macroeconomics push you to think critically about markets and governments, while Foundations of Econometrics equips you with the tools to interpret and use real-world data. On the politics side, you might choose Politics of the Global South, exploring issues of development and governance, or Global Superpowers, where you’ll look at how power is shifting in the international system. This is where you begin to see how economics and politics truly intersect.

Year 3
Your final year gives you the freedom to specialise in areas you’re passionate about. You could study Public Policy Analysis, applying your knowledge to pressing policy questions, or take Current Issues in Economics, which tackles debates such as inequality, debt, and global trade. If you’re interested in data, modules like Econometrics and Data Science in Economics will strengthen your technical expertise, while options such as Security, Strategy and Technology or Politics of Crises and the Future of Governance focus on today’s political challenges. You also have the opportunity to spend a year abroad or take a work placement, giving you valuable experience and a competitive edge.
